Hello, Maybe ya'll can help me on this





I'm working on my church's bus; (2002 Int 3400 T444E servicing etc... found 3 broke bolts in the alt/ac bracket, fixed that. All is well until I reinstall the alternator.



Now, a week has passed since I removed this stuff, while I was running down parts etc... I labeled both the pos & neg wires, but somehow I let the regulator wiring slip by I made a mental note of where each wire went, but you know how that goes



I got everything back together OK, but alt was not charging. I have tried every possible wiring combination I can think of, it's either not charging or Full-Load 18+ Kinda funny, alt charges normal on that particular setup, but after 1800 rpm it goes full load - not good.



I only remember 2 wires going to 2 terminals on the regulator, but now I have 3?? Could have missed it upon removal, not sure. I think the wires are colored orange/blue/black.



I can usually hold my own on mechanical stuff, (it's how I make my living), but this one's got me stumped. My alternator/wiring skills are a little rusty to boot. This ol PSD has me messed up :-laf Any help with this would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Ok, I checked this wiring today. All three of the extra wires have 12v, now I have tried every possible combination, and the only one I can get anything out of is all three wires on terminal #1, but after it hits 14v it keeps climbing. Thats not right, still some more checking to do, but I have cleaned all the cables on the batteries and alternator; prob going to load test the batteries tomorrow.

I think the black wire should be a ground. Is the tach acting up?? It has been a long time since I have worked on one, but I believe the blue is the tach feed. The regulator should be marked, what are they??

I looked all over for something to go by, I couldn't find any markings at all; regulator or otherwise. Don't even know make of alternator, doesn't look like original, the pulley bears signs of previous removal. I was thinking the black wire was a ground, but it has 12v too. Unless there's a short somewhere.

You must have lost a bet to work on your church bus eh? A football game was it?



Most all the bus alternators around here have only a hot wire and a ground wire. I have a few left that use the exciter wire (Bat pos) and a tach wire. There are many different types of alternators out there. Too may combinations to mention. I won't be of any assistance here as my IH bus does not have any wire to a regulater.



You need to call the IH bus dealer and ask what goes where.

I stand corrected(and humbled). Hoefler had it right, it WAS a ground.



Dunno how it slipped by, but it did; because i had all my grounds labeled

I was also under the mistaken impression that the alt. was internally regulated, but it was not. After I found the regulator it was a breeze to troubleshoot.



Hmmm, no lost bets GL, but sometimes i wonder
