Thanks, TDR Staff

It pulled the house down!

Referrals?

Anyone ever ride in one of these things?? Cant you get em with a crew cab. Wonder how it would be for towing the 5er?? I wonder if any of the TDR guys around here have been in one recently. What are the interiors like?? Can you get em pretty plush like our dodges? would be kind of cool to get one with the flat bed like the TOW TRUCKS use. I could put the old sand toys (maybe even a 12 valver toy) on there then pull a tt behind. . . hmmm have to think about that. I can see it now red international with a red and grey 12 valve puller on the bed. would look pretty cool going down the road.

I haven't been inside the new ones yet. I don't like what they have done with the nose and the headlamps. I bet you can get those interiors pretty loaded up. They are used for hauling race trailers too. The Dt466E is a decent motor, but is a lot like a PowerStroke in certain ways. If you're gonna go this route, I would have you look at a Freightliner FL50 or 70 CrewCab. You can get some nice engines in those!

I drove a DT466 a few years ago. I think it was a 210HP version. Man was that thing a dog. It was just a chassis and cab and it was still slow with a 6 speed. The Isuzu FSR's I had at the time would walk all over it. The cab was way worse also.

The DT530 kicks @$$ over the DT466. Same block series, too. Get it if you can.

Detroit Diesel sells both under the Series 40 label. Engine by International, injection by Cat, and electronic controls by DD.

tow trucks

agree on the thought of checking out the Freightliners. there are several configurations available, and sold at the Freightliner dealers. there are some aftermarket conversions also, also Kenworth and probably Peterbuilt?? if you get serious about it, look at all of them. gonna be a high dollar purchase most likely. do your homework.

fl70

yeah, my motorhome started life as a FL70 cab chassis with a Cummins C8. 3 (1992) and an Allison MD 3060. that sucker WILL get down the superslab!!

I shopped the heck out of medium trucks to pull the race cars... . and then bought a Class 8 truck!... anyway... like the other guys said, the 466 is pretty lame, the 466e is better... but you STILL cant get it turned up! Just like the little Cat motors no one will turn up the power so you can get performance and better mileage. Only the Cummins and Detroits (S40) are BOMBable. As far as trucks go, have a look at the Sterlings... the cab room is HUGE!! The Kenworths are $$$ because of the aluminum use, the Petes are cramped and tiny inside and the Freighters are ... well... not bad, but more $$ than the Sterlings.

I was killing time one day and stopped at IHC to check on the MD trucks. They said they were available with 8. 3 Cummins but the DTs ran better - I don't think so! I like the looks of the IHC better than Freightliner. I've owned several Binders! I had a Fleetstar straight truck that drove like a car and I thought the Transtars were as nice as Petes! Had a couple of 549ci V8s. You guys don't know what BAD mpg is until you've had one of those! 1. 5 loaded, 3. 0 empty. Craig

here's my baby :D

and yep! it's cummins powered, it's a 500hp motor (not sure of model, stupid me) This truck is only a business class FL112 (bottom trim level) and it rides NICE and the interior is pretty nice

JohnE, Yes the 466e is also a DD series 40. While it may be a HEUI engine like the small CAT, the electronics are- believe it or not- FORD! Like I said, it's a lot like a Powerstroke. Compare the ECM's and MAP sensors between a 466e and a late model Ford anything and you tell me. We have loads of DD 40's in one series of our collection trucks. They're solid for 9000 hrs, then problems!

I had a flatbed wrecker with a 230 HP DT466, 7-speed and air ride suspension. That baby sure had the pulling power and a smooth ride going down the road. Thumb's up on the air ride on what ever you go with.

As far as bombing a medium duty truck goes, why would you go out and buy a truck with a 190 HP engine, spend $$$$ on bombing it when you could just order your truck in whatever horsepower you needed. FWIW The local Cat dealer said he could flash my 3126's for an hour's labor.

JMHO I think those Freightliners are over priced, the parts are over priced and for me, their difficult climbing in and out of. Also, I've never really liked the idea of sitting on top of the battery box either. Here's something to think about. You carry your truck into a dealership for work on the same day a JB Hunt truck, or any other trucking company who owns 5000 Freightliners. Who do you thinks gonna get bumped to the end of the line? A week later, your service writer calls ya up and say's "your ready to go. "

My next truck will be one of those new 4300 Internationals. Hopefully by then they'll have all the bugs worked out of 'em.

Don't flame me too hard fella's. Just my personal experience. :)

The interiors in the new IH trucks are 54798764328 times better than the older trucks lol.

I run a route for Interstate Batteries and My work Vehicle is a 1997 IH With the 210hp 466 in it with 6+ trans in it. It has a side load mickey body(like a pepsi or coke truck) and can hold about 450 car batteries. WOW you talk about S L O W lol. At 35K+ and 210HP its hard to get moving. The truck is rather trouble free though... but last week all the rivets(yes rivets) that hold the ring gear on sheared off and cost about $1500 to repair, same thing has happened with one of our other trucks.

We also have 2 2000 model trucks set up the same way but with airbrakes and Alisson 4 speed autos in them. They are total pigs also... the slimy alissons won't even let you climb a curb without getting a run at it. Both of those trucks have been bigtime problem childs since day one. One of them has had more time in the shop than the 95 model and the 96 put together lol.

So if the repairs are on your bill I would Stay Away lol... although they do have some crew cab 4700s with the western hauler conversions on them with a flatbed and the DT530 motor in them... . sweet looking rides

Evan, yep, it's an ISM! I found the tag at the back drivers side of the motor. I never really poked around under the hood of it until yesterday, man that is awesome looking, one huge RED valve cover :D
