Intro, thank you, SNG question

Hello all.



First let me thank everyone here for the help. Without this group, I would not have known what to look for when I purchased my new vehicle.



The truck is: 2005 2500, six speed, quad cab, LWB, 3. 73 LSD, Laramie



This is my first diesel, and my first new vehicle ever. I love the thing.



The Stupid New Guy question: Where is the fuel filter that I'm supposed to drain the water out of every time I fill the tank? The manual tells me I'm supposed to do it, but doesn't tell me how/where.

Welcome. The filter is in a canister hanging off about midway down the left (Drivers) side of the engine. There is a tube running down the front of the canister with a clear hose on the bottom and a lever at the top (yellow I think). Just turn the lever.

That said, I bet you'd be hard-pressed to find many TDR members who actually drain the 'water' from the fuel filter at every fill-up... if ever. When you start changing your own fuel filter (and observing the drainings from it in a glass jar) you'll likely find durn little, if any, water... a function of two things:



1. The water separator doesn't actually work very well at all, and

2. You buy your fuel from a reliable, high-volume station, so there's not too much water in it to begin with.



Just my $0. 02. Anybody out there actually drain at each fill-up? Or even close? Or EVER (outside of filter changes or 'water in fuel' messages)?

Good question i have had mine for 6 mounths and i haven,t drained it yet . I will have to check it out to se if theres any water in it.

Thanks everyone! I'm just getting caught up after my holiday adventures. (Anyone else get stuck in Newark on the 23rd?)



I've read the thread asking how often people drain the water from the filters. I don't expect I'll do it every tank. As mentioned, I buy fuel from reliable, high volume stations whenever possible.



Crabman: Thanks for the link to the pictures. That's perfect. I do plan on getting the service manual, but thought I should make a payment on the truck first. ;-)

I've had my new rig since September, have 10K on it, and have only drained it at oil change time, and then that probably didn't have enough water to warrant it. Not something to worry about, just keep an eye on it now and then.
