2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Irritating "clicking" sound near Emergency Brake

Hello all y'all. I am having a problem and I hope you can come to the rescue. I have this very annoying clicking sound that is driving me nuts. I remember reading about similar situations in the past on the website, but none of the possible solutions worked for me. Here are some specifics on the noise.



It is worse when it is warm in the cab. Cold mornings, I barely notice it.



It happens most frequently at highway speed on LA's uneven pavement.



It happens at slow speed, but usually when the truck's attitude is somewhat disturbed, not so much when approaching like a speedbump, but rather when approaching a speedbump at an angle.



I've taken the entire dash apart, pedal assembly, e-brake, driver's kick panel, etc and wire tied everything that looked like it may be a possible culprit.



The sound is of a clicking nature, sounding somewhat like a relay swinging in free air and lightly rapping against some solid piece of metal.



Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've had that same sound for about 40,000 miles now. Mine is coming from within the automatic gear shifting mechanism in the steering column. However, you might be describing the creaky A-pillar joint, to which there's a TSB. Either way, I suspect your noise is echoing from another location. Good luck, mine drove me crazy until I decided 'Screw It'.

Thanks for the info guys. I went ahead and bit the bullet and dropped the dash to perform the TSB. That is certianly the problem! I drove the chisel as the TSB reccomends, but I may not have done it enough. There is still a little bit of noise but at least now it is only over the big bumps. I'll tackle it again next weekend. I'll tell ya, it didn't seem like this could be the culprit, just looking at the TSB, but I figured I may find something else when I had it apart. Guess I was wrong. Thanks again!!

I think I have the same squeak but usually only when I'm going offroad. Man that looks like a lot of work just to get rid of a squeak. I think I'll just turn up my stereo.

I had noise/rattles coming from the driver side from three placesf places, one noise was coming from the bolts that mounted my aftermarket nerf step bars. I had to add some washers to the front mounting bolts (the bar attached to the cab mounting holes, and the shop used bolts that were too long, and were hiting the bottom of the cab).



Another noise was the one caused by the automatic transmission shift lever connections (used some foam and tie wraps to keep the levers from rattling) under the cab near the transmission. I was too lazy to go down to the dealer and get one of those plastic isolators (a new one, the old one looks work out).



The last and hardest to find (rattled more when turning a curve), was the hardened plastic wiring loom covering for the under the hood engine compartment light, which was hitting the hood (this sounded like it was coming from the rear of the dash. I fixed that rattle with some foam and tie wraps also. My 70,000 mile '00 year truck is now quiter that my friends '04 model (except for the motor!, which is a good noise).

My 02 developed an extreamly irritating creek/ clicking sound at 15,000 mi. The expert mechanic at the dealer could not find it. I solved it by using a long pry bar and punch to hit the cab in various locations at the pinch welds. I went in from the top with the hood open infront of the drivers door below the hood hinges also opened the door went in the open space in front of the hinges from between the fender and door and from the hinge area. On the inside of the truck I removed the plastic kick panel and peened the pinch welds through the hole behind the panel. The other sound that was difficult to find was the creek created by the transmission shift tube. At the fire wall the tube passes through a seal. use silicone spray. stick the spray tube in the colum near the fire wall through the expanded metal sleave as far as possible. this one was a noise that I had a hard time fixing.
