6.2L GM Diesel -- Front light strangeness

Here's one for you guys to figure out. I was thumbing thru an antique truck calander put out by Truck Parts Inc. , of Wichita, Ks. They had one picture of three Dodge pickups, one was a 1938 Dodge pickup, a 1939 Dodge Diesel pickup, and the other was a 1940 Dodge pickup. What the heck did they have in 1939 for a Diesel??

Could have been one of a lot of choices. It could have been a Cummins. Maybe a Hercules. Anyone know for sure?

The diesel was an option for 3 years in the late 30s in the Dodge trucks, it was a Dodge diesel engine with the same HP/TQ as the Dodge gas engine. I read an article called "The first dodge diesel" last year somewhere, maybe in the TDR mag?

On the consolidated diesel subject, if they made the 2,000,000th engine in late 2001 and the 1,000,000 Dodge diesel in early 2003 then nearly half the engines are in dodge pickups.

jrobinson2,

I think that CDC 2 mill engine is separate from the Cummins engine. It just say that Cummins announced that it was the 2 mill eng produced by CDC ( a joint venture with case)

Located in Whitakers, N. C. , CDC was formed in October 1980 and produced its first engine on July 1, 1983. The company produces a wide range of medium-duty electronic and mechanical diesel, natural gas and propane engines, as well as components.

In addition to Peterbilt and PACCAR, major customers for CDC include Case, Freightliner, Blue Bird, Monaco, Spartan, Onan, Komatsu, Gradall and Thomas Built Bus. Engines produced by CDC are used for tractors, combines, log skidders, backhoes, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, buses, RVs, power generation and marine applications.

CDC 1st engine was July 1st ,1983. Cummins started producing engines long before that.

I am no expert ,but didn't want any one to thing that 1/2 of all the Cummins engines produced are in dodge pickups

My understanding was that the 4B3. 9, 6B5. 9 (our 12v engine) 6C8. 3, ISB(our 24v engine), ISC, ISL, ISX and a few others all come from the Consolidated partnership as Cummins engines.

Cummins has produced far more than 2,000,000 engines but I thought the engines above including the ones in our Dodge pickups were all produced by Consolidated Diesel under the Cummins name.

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me :)

I think there was a recent article in the TDR mag that was about a tour of the Cummins Columbus, IN plant. During the tour they were shown the various steps to build a 5. 9 with the machines in action. Is that correct or is my poor excuse for a memory failing me again?
