Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Is a primelok worth the money?

I am considering a Primelok for my 96 to ease the filter change. Is this worth the money or is there a better method for re-locating the fuel filter? Thanks.

I bought the kit for my 97. The quality of the parts look good, hoses are premade and the adapter block is machined nicely. The problem I have and the reason I have not installed it yet is while the filter becomes more accessible but it looks like the mounting plate would hinder access to other things like the fuel shutdown solenoid, injection pump, fuel plate? starwheel? I don't think doing the fuel filter is that bad anyway.



I don't know if this helps, hopefully someone can chime in who has one installed, maybe I am just looking at it wrong or something.



I will use all the parts, but would like to find a better spot to mount the filter, even if that meant getting new lines made up.

I had one on my rig when I bought it. hated it. took it off and gave it away for parts. the extra 6 inches it moves the filter isnt worth squat, and it takes up even MORE room! it also attaches to the intake horn and makes using aftermarket(afe/cfm/ect. )impossible. If your going to the hassle of relocation, put it (filter) somewhere its helpfull!

Put one on my 95 after the second filter change and drawing blood for the second time. A bargain at twice the price! Yes, it is a compromise on access to other things under the hood. I have very few aftermarket accessories that don't compromise something.

I have one cause I got tierd of loosing blood every time I changed the fuel filter. Go to readers rigs, and scroll down to my name, the best picture of my install is in the Frantz filter by pass install. It is tucked back in the corner kind of out of the way. I like you, did not like how it covered every thing.

Look for "MLee DHRA" in the readers rigs. Mine works good. I cut the "HOOD" down to fit my needs.

It's in the way big time. No sense drawing blood to change the stock fuel filter. Especially the spin on type line on a '94 through '96. It's easy once you learn how.



Remove the two nuts that fasten the master cylinder to the vacuum brake booster. That allows you to lean the master cylinder toward the fender to provide room to work. Use a small screwdriver to help disconnect the WIF sensor connector. I use a large screw driver as a chisel on the upper rim of the filter to loosen it so I can unscrew it by hand. A few good hits does it quick and simple. Remove the filter toward the front of the engine room under the wiring mess. I don't ever spill fuel doing it this way.

I have one on my 97 "parts" truck and it makes it real easy to change the filter. You had better check and see if they are still available as last time I talked to Ashland they were "going to make a few more". You will have to decide if it is worth the money. Shadrach

Did you cut up the mounting bracket to make it fit where you mounted it? Is everything included in the kit or did you need some longer fuel lines? I like where you mounted it. Thanks.

Are you concerned about getting fuel on your wiring in that location?

That is a nice solution, did you have to get new lines made? or did they reach to that location?

Prime-Lok

JDKammin,

I have one installed on my 98 and it does make some things harder to reach. If you ever have to change the fuel filter on the road at night,in the freezing cold you will quickly see the advantage too having the Prime-Lok. If you are interested I have a brand new one still in the box for sale. It will fit from 94-96. If interested send me a PM.

I worked on rearranging wiring & hoses in the area of the filter on my '96, and made filter access a lot easier. The biggest help was disconnecting the mounts for the shutdown & run relays hanging there on the cowl and pushing them out of the way.

To answer all your Questions, yes I cut down the mounting bracket, and shortened its length [by hand with a rod saw] a little and of course drilled the mounting holes. The hoses are long enough to reach, no problem. Just get them in the right ports. Puts everything easy to reach. With the manual trans you have to check for clearance for the clutch resavor Genoe's has the primeloc for the same price I paid for mine.

i moved the fuel filter on my 94,well i didnt like that stock filer anyway so i put on a davco 382 fuel processer off a semi truck. it goes back by the tank. it is huge it holds about a gallon of fuel. when you have to change the filter. its so easy because you dont have to worry about losing the prime,because the filter housing is up side down. and has a check valve built in the inlet side. i put it before the prefilter. it has good fuel pressure and it helps keep the fuel from getting air in it so the engine starts easier and is quiter. and it doesnt smoke black near as bad as it used to. it also has a water drain,and heater. also it has a fleetgaurd 5 micron filterthanks
