Is a rear disc brake conversion kit worth it??

I need to put new brakes on the rear of my truck. . Its gonna need pads, drums and springs basically the works. . I like the idea of disc brakes on the rear but not sure if its worth doing. Do the brake pads last very long?? How much better does the truck stop??

1: The pads do last longer. I'm at 99k with 60% remaining.

2: Yes, they stop better than drum brakes and don't require adjustment.



As to whether it is worth it or not. ( A properly adjusted drum setup has more area of contact than a disk setup. The biggest advantage is clamping force and heat dissipation) Do you mind adjusting the drum system? The cost is high unless you have a spare 01. 5-02 4:10 rear end/master cylinder setup laying around. Mike

IMO, yes. I got an aftermarket kit and installed it with help from another TDR member. Took about half a day, not too hard. My truck stops alot better now then before, loaded and unloaded. The initial cost kinda sucks, but when things do wear out, they're cheaper to replace. Again, just my opinion.

I don't think they have a kit for a dually tho.

FYI - if you do the factory style setup you'll need new rims (17" i think). I know the rims on my 05 are bigger than the ones on my 01 that had drum brakes.

Here is my EGR brakes after 2 years..... Recently I thought my rear pads were worn out and bought replacements (for 76-78 Cadillac Eldorado)... But were like half worn but put the new ones in anyway.....



i am very glad I did this conversion. . It stops better and no real maintenance or adjustment..... I think I paid just over $1000 for the front and rear kits. Very well worth the money!

This is the front brakes I bought... . They have "Carbon Kevlar" pads... they are heat treated and last longer..... the slotted rotor releases the gasses to help the beast stop shorter... . the boxes is the caliper rebuild kit for the front calipers... .

After you remove all the drum brake stuff, this is the caliper mounting bracket for the rear... hooks up and works like a charm.....

I've got rear disks from the factory :-laf and love them,

just a experience... . yesterday on the way home cruising with bumper to bumper traffic about 45 50 mph i was in the right lane and another stock say 98 99 dodge ctd longbed was in the left a little ahead. his traffic stopped ahead of him and he diddnt slow down in time so he hit the binders hard. :--) his back end locked up and he went into a slide. his back end wanted to pass him, he went off the road and saved it in the dirt median. Oo. dont know how he saved it. He should have rolled. if there were a wall there it would have been a mess.



I had a similar experience bout a month or so ago, same suituation talking to the wife on the phone not paying any attention my buddy in the passenger saved us and my truck. In front of us there was a wreck. all I hear is BRAKES BRAKES!!!!!!!!! looked up and stood on the binders, ABS kicked in and no sliding or anything out of control. I was sure i was gunna get hit from behind too so looked back and saw I was ok, looked back forward and i swear I was 2 feet from the car in front yanked the wheel left to the median and avoided crushing the jeep in front of me.



judging from the two similar events I can say thank god for disk rears. Disk brake rears, abs or both it was nothing like the other guy.
