Hi,

Ive been in the fire alarm industry for 30 years and also a retired vollie. I know quality when I see it. YOU build a hell of a harness. Please send me the cost and purchasing instructions and I will order one.

Pete

I am about to do the sport headlight upgrade and I have all of the parts needed to build my own wiring harness. My question is, it looks like the stock sport wiring does not use the low beam function of the 9004 bulb, so the only low beam lighting comes from the 9007 bulb. Has anyone wired theirs to include the low beam from the 9004 so that all low beams are burning. Daniel Stern specifically states that "The low beam filament of the inboard 9004 is not used --
these lamps do not have optics to focus the light from it." Is this true? It would be nice to get that extra low beam lighting if it isn't aimed too high.

I have had my DEPOT headlights installed for quite some time now - made my own HD wiring, and installed power relays triggered by OEM switch wiring, the relays take all the added amperage direct from the batteries, not the OEM dash switch. My setup uses both hi and lo beams - all filaments - when light switch is on hi beams, but only the low beam filaments otherwise. I used soldered connections at all points, rather than crimped connections to assure solid non-deteriorating current flow. My driving/fog lights are set to only come on when they are separately switched in. These lights are a dramatic and spectacular improvement over the OEM setup, and while there have been scattered reports of overheating damage to reflectors when using all filaments, no problems with mine so far. I liked the headlight upgrade well enough to also upgrade the tail lights as well.

Firefighter_ 2000, where do you get the female plug that adapts the OEM light socket to the wiring harness? Very nicely done wiring harness, btw.

Is the 9007 bulb the one to the side of the car and the 9004 bulb the one toward the grilled? can they be interchanged?? and put in incorrectly?

can they be interchanged?? and put in incorrectly?

There is a slight difference in the way the base of the bulb is configured, so they cannot be interchanged without cutting off one of the small tangs on the headlight opening. So accidental swapping of the bulbs isn't possible if you haven't modified the lens.

That's odd. Mine would change back & forth between the 9004 & 9007s. I tried them swapped around for a few days once just to see if they would make a difference.

Hmm that is odd. Were your headlight assemblies aftermarket? Maybe they purposely designed them without the extra tang because they knew people were modifying 9004 lenses to take 9007 bulbs. I know on my stock non-sport headlights (9004) I definitely had to cut off one of the locating tangs because there is a difference in the position of one of the three between the two different bulbs.

Edited 1-11-18 - I've made a write up that shows exactly how to put it together, and where to get the parts etc. I'll try to make a post soon with those instructions. In the mean time, email me at -- email address removed -- for the instructions

I've recently started making a few of these again occasionally. If anyone is interested in one still, I can send directions or you may purchase one from me. It might take a couple of weeks to order parts & build. Cost is $310 including shipping.

I'm not qualified to say if it's true, but if Stern says it I'm inclined to believe it.

I can say that the burning all 4 low filaments puts out a lot of light, and I can also say I think a good bit of it doesn't really make it down the road. That would seem to support Stern's assertion.

I have run the SUVLights harness and Depo lights for ~4 years and came to this thread to buy Firefighter's harness as I'm tired of the SUV item's small parts failing regularly. Sad to hear he's stopped making them, grateful he's giving out the DIY info.

That is incorrect. The low beam filament of all bulbs are used on low, and all four high beam filament of all bulbs are used when on high. Daniel Sterns harness may not be wired to use the inboard filament, but the harness I made and the instructions I supply use it as well.

Stern's statement is true about his harness, yes. I know he doesn't believe in lighting all 4 filaments on low, but I had not specifically asked why. FireEB is saying why Stern feels that way. I believe all 4 lows are not lit on OEM sport lights either.

The SUVLight harness, and most likely any others out there, do light all 4. So FireEB is hoping it is a good thing to light the 9004 on low. ANd I suspect it is not nearly as beneficial as it would be with better-designed lights. BTW Stern did tell me in his opinion the factory sport lights are much better-designed than the chinese copies from Depo & others.

I wish I hadn't given my original lights away; I'd like to use them (extensively modified) as a base for mounting Hella projectors. Then again, maybe making some from fiberglass would be just as easy as hacking up the originals.

BTW FF2000, thanks for the super writeup on your harness!
