Easter 2007???

I just don't want to spend the money to pay someone to do it. I would rather do it myself and learn something. Plus the money I saved by doing it myself I can spend on more stuff :D

If I don't have the rights tools or space to work on it, I'll pay someone else to do it. However, I will try to watch and ask lots of questions so I can do it myself the next time.

For me the nearest, heated, and enclosed shop that I have long-term access to is 65 miles away. The fact that my truck is my only form of reliable transporation plays into things too.

I do have a '45 jeep that I completely tore down and spent resto-modifying every Friday, for 10 hours/day, for just over 2 years at the aforementioned shop. The only things I didn't do myself were rebuild the motor and the welding. My friend tried to teach me how to weld, but for some reason sheet metal is not the time :-laf !

Take note of my "custom" cold air intake with UNI filter in the second pic:

I do everything myself on my vehicles unless there is a call for many special tools to get the job done. For instance I will tackle the engine, transmission and rear end without a problem. I have torn into automatic transmissions for the last thirty years, but when it comes to my NV5600, there are way too many special tools that I don't have to get the job done so it goes into the shop where I work to get it done.

I don't deny asking and getting help when the work is heavy since I have almost destroyed my lower back doing mechanical work. I know my limits now.

Plus the fact of age and sometimes a little bit of laziness has had some effect lately:) I do have a lot of tools that some wouldn't have normally like a good welder that can mig, tig and stick weld plus a spool gun attachment that will weld aluminum and I also have a plasma cutter. I just don't have great access to the materials that I need so time can run long for some projects. That is why I have a work car so I can always get to work to make money for my projects.

I also have a heated and air conditioned shop that helps when the weather does not co-operate.

heres a funny story... back in high school, a buddy of mine asked me to teach him to change his oil, so i had no problem and told him to bring his car over to the shop. i told him to pick up a filter and oil and he says "yeah i know"... so that night the kid comes over, opens the trunk and takes out his filter and one court of oil and says "so where do we start?" i asked if he had more oil and he didn't, so once i got done laughing at him i sent him back to the parts store... i understand your thinking here josh, but growing up in the generation that relies on everyone else for EVERYTHING, my only question is what can you do about it? me, i'm just gonna keep doing what i do, and laugh at the people that can't change their own oil

I try to do everything myself... at least what I can and have time for. Heck, getting my head o-ringed and put back on took only 7 MONTHS. It's not that hard to do, but I don't really have a lot of spare time. The second time only took half a day. I think for a lot of people it comes down to them being able to work at their job and pay for having their stuff worked on rather than working on it to save a buck. They do what they do best and have somebody else do what they do best. For me... I'll work on it to save 50 cents. : :D And I have a hard time trusting other people to work on my stuff.

I love to work on my own stuff and to help people with theirs, there's always a few things torn apart in the shop. Right now there's a sea doo, Raptor, 2 mod mountain cats, and 2 sno pros, oh and a arctic cat mini bike, all in various stages of repair. Plus I have a fass and exhaust waiting to be put on my truck and a 93 in the field that has to be fixed..... I need more hours in the day. But, working on things like that is kinda like meditation for me, I can get rid of a lot of stress... or gain a lot depending on how things go. :)

I try to do anything and everything myself... I have recently rebuilt my driver's seat for the 3rd time... the foam is completely gone, and maybe its time to take it somewhere to get re-upholstured (sp?)... I know it needs to, but I keep thinking I can do it myself... I probably can, but I am kind of afraid what it would look like if I tried... :-laf

I guess I am a DIE-HARD do it yourselfer!!

I believe I have sat on Josh's tailgate and drank a beer or 10... so, I can sorta say I've helped him work on his truck.

You're welcome, Josh. :-laf

BTW: Didn't Dave build your transmission? I'm just messin' with ya.

Matt - knows his limits, but still exceeds them... daily.

My Tailgate..... Maybe at TiM... . My tailgate hasn't been right for a couple years... . it spends most of it's time propped up against the back of the garage! :-laf That's part of the bodywork that's soon to come... . :D

How will you learn if you don't exceed your limits?

Josh

it's ok Matt... . You should move up here, then we'll see if we BOTH can exceed our limits. :-laf

The ricers around here would never be the same.....

What kind of limits are you talkin' about, Josh?

  • Datin' young women folk
  • Having too much blood in the beer... or vice versa, I forget...
  • Catchin' fish

Get back to me... :-laf
