IS CI4 oil Classification ok to use or is CI4PLUS required??

I just bought a case of 12 quarts of Royal Purple oil from RPMOIL company. THey sent me oil the only has the CI4 classification on the label. I have been using CI4PLUS Mobil delvac 15w40 as I thought the "PLUS" for for the newer EGR engines.



I checked with Royal Purple directly and they said the oil was made prior to June 2005 but it was fine to use since the 2004. 5 Cummins actually only requires the CI4 oil... .



What so you all think??? Use it or ship it back for a refund???

I wouldn't worry about it. If you bought this oil 1 year ago today for your 2004, you'd be using CI-4 at best.



The issue is the fact that you may have expected CI-4 Plus from your supplier and got CI-4. On principle I personally would not be thrilled by that fact unless they told me it would be CI-4. But, I wouldn't bother with returning it & would happily use it.



Just for context -- I went to Walmart and I was looking for Mobil 1 Suv & Truck 5w-40 True Synthetic. It was rated at CI-4 and not CI-4 Plus and I know that's a relatively new product. I'd imagine they'll be coming out with CI-4 Plus in the near future.



As for the truck, it meets the guidelines for the 2004 and 2004. 5 models so it won't care.

Thanks Jay... I did check the owner's manual and you are correct... it only calls for the CI4, so I will use it and smile... thanks again

Here is what Cummins says about oil ratings, CH-4 is also OK according to them in non EGR applications.

CI4 plus is for newer EGR engines from what I've read. Ferds tune it further with a different ash content and the "right" amount of anti-foaming stuff. It's kinda funny, if you have a cold running problem on a ferd, first thing they do is change the oil.



Like JGann says, CI4 is fine for the Cummins.

Thanks for all the replies... I guess I will go ahead and use the oil as it is probably fine... sure irritates, me, though, that I paid the same $6 per quart that folks are paying for the CI4PLUS oil... .



Learned a lesson, though... I contacted RPMOIL several times and NEVER got a response... sure won't buy a darn thing from them.



I teach marketing, and statistics indicate that a satisfied customer mentions a positive purchase to one or two other folks, but a disgruntled customer usually finds 10-13 people to complain to... . did I get to 13 people????

The CI-4 PLUS is just to get by until the new CJ-4 OIL Comes to the market place about a year from now. If you hear of PC-10 engine oils, those are the ones under development now. The new oils will have to address the (ULSD) Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel Fuels that will come to play October 2006. The EPA has mandated a limit of 15 PPM Sulphur content for that fuel! The current on-highway Diesel fuel is 500 PPM!

Definitely fuel prices are going to rise, as well as oil prices! I wouldn't have a clue as to how much, but the article I read with regards to the CJ-4 (PC-10) oils claimed the price of those oils will cost 15-20 percent more than today's CI-4 products!
