Is it a good idea to remove the plastic neck on Air box?

You know, the little neck that connects the side of the box to the fender on my 2000. I have mine out right, I thought I read somewhere that under hard pulls that thing will collapse. But I just wondered about drawing hot air from engine compartment.

I've had mine out now for about 6 weeks. I have experienced 0 problems. MoparMuslce and Massdiesel opened my hood one day and ripped (took) the thing out and said it was junk!

BTW, I towed to FL & back to RI without the tube and experienced no problems, even in hot 95+ temps

The increase in airflow will outweigh the bad caused by the increase in hot air sucked in to your engine.

Idealy, build a new larger duct to connect the box to the fenderwell.

I took mine out for awhile ... . then I noticed debris would accumilate ... leafs and cigarette butts that had been driven over times.

Decided to drill 3/4 inch holes in the front side of the tube to assist air entry, cool air from inside the fenderwell.

When mine is installed it always sucks my filter gauge down about halfway. I figure it must be collapsing somehow because there is no blockage in the intake tunnel that I can see. With it out my gauge stays up until the filter gets dirty. One drawback or big plus depending on your viewpoint is the turbo whine is much louder with it out. Mine has been out for a long time now with no ill effects.

The funny thing about this is that I was standing there, having just met you, watching as Scott starting yanking on the airbox. I knew what was coming as he had done the same thing to me the night before, and you should have seen the look on your face when that thing went flying over Scott's shoulder as he muttered, "get rid of this thing, it's junk!". John just shook his head smiling and walked back into the garage.

Mine has been out since then as well and no side effects. Actually, I'm thinking seriously of drilling a series of 1 1/2 inch diameter holes around the front side and rear of the bottom of the airbox to aid in more air getting in. Can't see any good reason why it would hurt.

PacBrake going in next week during the week off!

When you see someone open your hood and start ripping things out you are kind of like:mad: what's he doing to my baby:eek:

I have heard extremely funny stories about how you starrted drinking when Massdiesel was tearing through your transmission:D :D :D LOL

I guess we knidof had the same look on our faces at that point:D

Have fun!!

a larger duct to connect the stock box to the fender well is what im looking for. the air valve for my e brake is in the exact spot where scotty would have you drill the hole for that system. any ideas [and especially photos] would be welcome. i just got back from crawling under our 2001 and had to notice that the channel is very narrow and appears to run right above the headlight on the passenger side. also noticed that wher the foglite holes are would be a promising source of fresh air, right in front, with a little shop hose and ingenuity , who knows? :)

I must really be an odd-ball as I still leave mine in mostly because of I fear that if I take it out water may get sucked into the intake easier.

I would not be worried about the water. What little makes it into the air filter box will just pool on the bottom. It is highly unlikeley that there would be enough suction to pull it through the air filter.

I took mine out for about a month but after the debries built up I had to put the boot back in, I was in the shop and when I took the top off the air filter housing I found a hub cap off a PSD and also there was a hood ornament off a durramax????;) :D Kevin

I had the air cleaner box out to install the e-brake. When I went to put the box back in, I couldn't remember if the flange on the duct went inside the box on the outside. I pulled it thru to the inside, but would like to know the correct assembly.

Oh,YEH!!,,As I am now rollin on the floor here and trying to compose myself to type, you said a hubcap from a Powerjoke and a emblem from a Duracrap,EH??,,Now I know what that undetermined metal was in my box,RICER PARTS!!!!!,,Ok,seriously here,,My sleeve has been removed since day one on all of my trucks and will do it again,,The amount of water taken in is not a problem, you can check it your self to ease your question,,Drive in the heaviest rain you get, pull into the garage and pull the top of the air box,,You'll see what I mean,,One thing it does do is allow the motor to not have to pull negative air from rear of fender,,Look and see where the air is coming from, and you can tell that no air or little is coming from the front, due to headlights and their design,,I myself am not sold on the Pshchotty deal as it is a poor design(again negative air, from cowl vents, which are not certainly a ram air setup)and who in their right mind wants to cut their truck up to install it,,I'll stick to the stock box and modify it its at least a proven piece and cleanly assembled... .

I took mine out and have had no problems. I took a piece of 4'' flex and ran it to the passenger door to get 'cooler' fresh air. I pulled off the rubber and foam spacer in the gap between the fender and door jam. This gives a me a cooler source of air with only little mods done on the truck, I am not cutting up the truck! (yes I know this is a negitive source but it is better than stock)

Help an old man out.

If I've got this right, the area near the passenger door jam maybe negative compared to the air in the wheel well brought from the front of the truck. However, as we all know, the air at the door jam is positive compared to the pressure inside the filter box because the filter box sucks. ;) So, I guess I'm at a loss as to why some might think this would be a less than desired location.

Are we trying to stuff air down the air box? Does the air in the fender well provide 'forced' air? Doesn't removing the tube eliminate the 'forced' air flow if it does? Then anyplace we can get more cool, debris free air is acceptable, right? Or did I miss something in my translation of the messages?
