is it hard to rebuild a 48re with the suncoast kit?

I am toying with the idea of trying to rebuild my ailing 48RE with the 542 dollar suncoast kit. I am talking about going through the transmission myself. I have access to the factory dodge service manual. Is it beyond standard tools like screw drivers and socket/combination wrenches? Do i need special tools? How much do they cost? My 48RE is slipping badly in second gear, but everything else works great. ANy ideas?

Very doable, some of the specialty tools are nice for inserting seals and all. I would suggest a dial indicator. I would buy the VB though. Replace the input shaft. Even if your just replacing it with the stock one. The input shaft will develop stress cracks. Call Dave Goerend. Talk to him about input shafts, and even rebuilding it. He will help you out with it.

you will need a press for the overdrive section and you will need to make a tool as to compress the "800 lbs spring" for the overdrive. if you use the intermediate shaft to line up clutches, it will stick way out of the overdrive section and thats what you will need to get around to compress the spring. the heavy band clamp and strut make all the difference in the world when it shifts into second gear, firm and positive. other than that just some heavy snap ring pilers was about all the special tools I needed.

I was planning on doing this also... just read through the manual and you'll get a pretty good idea of what specialty tools you might want to pick up or borrow. It's up to you on how many you want to get... I plan on making a couple and also buying a couple of others.
