2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission is it just me? or plain bad luck?

2nd year... . 2nd windshield!



I have horrible luck with this issue. I had a 95 f-250 gasser that made it a year before it got a star in the windshield, I traded it for a 95 f-25 PSD. Two weeks later same thing. I drove it till I totaled it. Then bought the Dodge. This makes a total of 4 windshields. Each time the Dodge windshield has been cracked too bad to be repaired. And of course with the cold weather it just gets worse every time I turn on the defrost. Just needed to vent.



I will just figure on changing windshields when I change my tires.

Some people have all the luck. Here I am with a '95 that has a lot of little stone chips. I keep hoping that it will crack right in front of the driver so I can sic my insurance company on it. No luck in that happening.

Heck out here with the gravel they put down for snow your lucky to get a windshield to last a winter. My current windshield has been repaired 4 times, has 2 unrepairable cracks and is pitted beyond belief in two years.

I have had good luck with getting the chips and nicks filled when done ASAP. I had a Toyota Camry for commuting that was a stone magnet. That one had at least two windshields and numerous chips fixed.



When I cleaned up after the Xmas snowstorm we had, I brushed the snow off my wife's Explorer but left the ice. I moved it out of the way to plow but left it running. Next day she gets in and the windshield had cracked off a stone chip that was there when we bought it. I had that changed already. I have $100 deductable on the glass. Better than nothing I guess.



No problems with the Ram and I run with the big dogs in the hammer lane on this one four lane with a narrow divider. Same road that the Camry got hammered on.



No wind deflector on the front of the hood by the way.

I dont have a wind deflector either. I had one on both of the other trucks though. This crack has grown to about 12-13" in a matter of 2 days. It cracked on the way to work. By the time I pulled into the office, 20 miles away, it was about 8"s long. I haven't been using the defrost to try to help slow it down this time.

Tires and stone chips

What brand of tires? I have found that certain tires toss stones from the front tires onto the windshield.

each time it has happened I have seen it coming. At least 3 of them were thrown from semi tires.

One windshield per year is par for the course with the half inch diameter winter traction sand they use in Montana. Unless I want to replace two per year it's best too wait till spring for a new one. Every vehicle here over ten years old has the leading edges of the hood and roof sandblasted to bare metal. Bug shields do help.

Maybe with the Dodge/Cummins you are following all those slower trucks more often.

I had a chip in my truck the first day I owned it. Went for a little drive to try it out and bang... chip.



I replaced the window after having 6 chips repaired... I recieved the final one that did the window in from a fellow CDT driver who came off an off ramp to join our convoy to a Alaska Diesel Bombers meeting... I knew I should have punched it and got in front. .



Just as a side note, I have been using Novus windshiled repair up here in AK. They give you some little plastic things to put over your dings as soon as they happen. They keep the water out and that makes for a better repair. Also don't use rain-x on the window if you want the crack repair to work.
