my experience with trans temps and gauges

How to tell when transmission is full nv5600?

The other day when I was messing around I go to drop the truck in 4th at 3200rpm-ish. Not a power shift, I hit the clutch to the floor and go to shift. Just really freaking fast, and it wouldn't go in!!! I thought I might of just been a dumbass. Stuff like that happens, but in 4th?

So today I go to grab 3rd in the same fashing, Same deal!. then I go to grab forth, same thing!.

Now I this time took the time and held the shifter till it got into gear, and it was extreamly difficult.

If I shift at normal RPM's, I can move the shifter around withmy finger tips. Infact, it feels like it always has.

Curious, I know my clutch has some vibrations and the throw out barring is going, and the stock clutch 100% anymore after I installed the Edge stuff. Could it be the clutch isn't disenguaging all t he way at redline rpm's? ? or syncro's?

If it's the Syncro's, how would I go about getting the dealership to do the work under warrenty? You think they would rule in abuse? Also, what about just plain changing the orignal trans fluid? That is something I havn't done. and plan to anyways this week sometime when I do my oil change.

Jason, there is nothing wrong with your transmission or clutch. The NV5600 is a huge transmission and is not built to speed shift. Continue to use your finger tips, it and you will be happy.

Nick, I don't wanna start another "auto vs manual" thread. But the simple fact remains, I was once able to do this style/speed of shift with ease, now I can't between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th.

Now as to why, possible reasonings?

The funny part is that I can't recall in the a long while since I wanted to do a speed shift to chirp some tires, or ever just get though the gears on the long end like that. . hmmm I would have to believe the torque is finishing out the clutch, I hope it's not the syncro's.

If anyone has had htis problem before, be great since this would require a trans rebuild, I can get the clutch in there at the same time. heh, maybe get the dealer to pay for hte labor of both.

Am I answering my own question here now?

I just fired up the truck for a warmup just now. I leave her in neutral clutch enguaged. I drop the clutch and push the stick to 3rd, X amount of resistance. I put the stick back to neutral, enguage the clutch, so the same for 5th and 6th, X / half resistance--ish.

As far as reverse, there always has been this resistance, same as creaper unless your rolling a little bit. It just isn't the same in 3rd and 4th.

Jason, since you are going to change the transmission oil anyway, (with 38,000 it is due) check for contamination of the drained oil. Pull the left PTO cover off and clean the bottom of transmission and magnet. Since the resistance is in 3rd & 4th, I would say the syncro's my be bad on those two gears. Good luck.

Nick, that's what I'm thinking aswell after my morning drive. The resistance is mostly at 2500+ RPM's as well, even with a slow shift at them RPM's it's difficult to get into gear.

What do you guys think my chances are with DC warrenting syncro's like this? Prolly should take the Edge stuff out 'eh?

When my clutch went (after a drag race!) I had a hard time with 3rd and 4th. Kept driving it for a while and it got worse real fast, like two or three weeks. Then I was having trouble in almost all gears, actaully shifted better timing the gears without the clutch. Next came a weird release, I would let the clutch out and all of a sudden the truck would jump forward like I side stepped it. Did that for two days then one day shifting into 5th on the expressway I heard a really loud bang! Truck still had forward power but no more clutch pedal. I drove it home (100+ miles!) and pulled it apart to find the center of the clutch blown into about 30 pieces. Replaced it with a Con OFE, changed the fluid and all is well now. Just some food for thought, try timing the upshifts and not using the clutch and see how it feels.

I'll keep an eye open for things getting worse like your did. then park it before it gets worse and save up for that clutch. :)

Question, after that drag race, did get a vibration in the clutch peddle when disenguaging the clutch?

If you are going to change your trans. gear oil before your trip to the dealership for possible warranty work on the trans. , you may want to make sure you use a "DC Approved" gear oil.

The factory product is quite expensive, although, I've heard some of the dealers are becoming more price competative. The prices, here, were over $20. 00/bottle, and a little over $15. 00 after some bargaining.

I ended up useing Pennzoil,s #3501, which, is supposed to meet all of DC's specs. It was $4. 99 at Autozone, here in Phoenix. I changed it out at 15,000 miles.

At 37,000 miles, I once again changed the trans. gear oil out to Specialty Formulations-MTL-P, which, I found on "bob is the oil guy.com", for $28. 95/gal. & $9. 95/qt. I haven't had it in very long (20 miles) but, there is a difference in the upshifting & downshifting quality, already. It seems to be getting better with each mile, also. The "notchiness" in the shifting quality is improving. Not as much binding while changing gears. It's not a dramatic improvement but, never the less, an improvement.

Red Line MTL is, also, supposed to eliminate some of the notchiness in the NV-5600. Heard a lot of good reports regarding this product. It's available for $7. 00/qt. at my oil shop.com. ($9. 15, locally).

You may want to consider a transmission filter (manual), available from Geno's Garage for about $30. 00. I don't see how it could hurt.

Good Luck, with your trans. problems.

Never noticed any vibrations, just a hard time with the shifting.

Damn it! Why can't I find anyone with the exact same problem as me for once :) Then again a few other people don't feel the same vibration I do. I suppose my feet are more sensitive.

ohh well, I'll get that clutch as #1 prioority

Anyone here in t he MN/Wi area wanna help me out? I know I talked to someone at Diesep perfomrance in WI a while back about this. I suppose I'll need to look him up again and get some things on order.
