Truck in question is a 90 W250. It an early (non-IC). It's got the Getrag in it. The body is in decent shape. It rusting on the hood and the roof, and of course the fenderwells. The odometer is not working, but the guess is it's a little over 300k on it. It's been taken care of. Is it worth $3000? Thanks

Is it 4wd or extra cab? I think those two things would add value. I suppose it depends on your particular use. I bought mine for the engine only but ended up keeping the whole truck just to play with.

I'm not smart enough to talk intelligently about the value between IC and NON-IC.

A running 4 WD Cummins for $3000, nah, not worth it, ummmmm, where is said vehicle located? :D Any pics available ?

If an IC is what I think it is, the answer is NO.

if you're looking to clean it up and paint it and such, i would say absolutely not worth it unless you're a body man with your own shop and time means nothing to you. If it's just for a beater then that isn't a horrible price just too high. My two cents after looking for 3 months for the just right W250 and finding it very far away. Maybe i'm a little cheaper than alot of folks on here.

If it's got no mechanical drive-line defects, that alone makes it a keeper. Just try to buy a good transmission for $3k. Your getting the whole truck.

I'm not a stickler for truck cosmetics. My trucks are used as trucks (hauling/hunting) and not soccor mom grocerie getters on parade.

The day I get a manicure is the day I'll have a purty street truck. Ain't gonna happen. :p

Blowby?

I got mine this spring, 92 4x4 auto 1ton single wheel pretty good body with no rust for 3500. It had some blowby, but I didn't worry about that too much. My local diesel wizard said it wasn't enough to worry about.

Unfortunately, it had been over toasted and cylinders were scored. After the headgasket blew and I took it apart, I am up for a rebuild. I didn't get that good of a deal. Since I can fix it I will be OK, but not a great deal.

From my limited experience, if mimimal blowby and no bad sounds from driveline in 4x4, probably not a bad deal.

IMHO Pros, you should be pre PCM computer, IE less to fail later and less complicated.

Cons, unless you know the truck and its owner, you never know.

Come on

"The day I get a manicure is the day I'll have a purty street truck. Ain't gonna happen. " Does that mean it's somehow femine to keep a truck looking good?? I can work mine remodeling houses on the side AND keep it clean so the rust monsters don't creep up, i guess i am cheaper than everyone on here, i need my stuff to LAST! :) I really think you could find a rust free version of that truck if you give it time and are willing to travel, that's all.

I had an '89 W250 auto, w/ 180k miles with a fisher plow that I sold last spring. I put it in the paper for $3k, got a lot of calls. The body was a little dented and some rust, no tail gate. The box was pushed down like the guy hauled 300 yards of stone in it. 2nd guy offered me $2500-gone! It needed outer axles, spindle bearings, ball joints. The rest of the truck was pretty solid. Use your own best judgement, drive it and look it over good.

Did I mention that I paid $250 for it?

Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys. For those who asked, it's a regular cab, 4x4, non- intercooled, with the getrag. I also am buying it to use as a truck should be. The current owners, who are good friends of ours, use it to pull their horse trailer with. I'm going to be doing the same. While it's nice to have a shiny, spotless truck, it's not a major priority of mine. I'm more interested in it not leaving me stranted with horses or cattle in tow. It's not in horrible shape, but it's definitely not new. We'll have to see what happens... .

Yep, I need a purty truck as much as I need a trophy wife :-laf Nice to look at but afraid to do any work because of possibly chipping a nail/paint. Time is money and if I got time to spit and polish my trucks then I should be out making the dough instead :D

It's the condition of the mechanicals that matter most. I recently sold a '69 cheby 1/2 ton that went through h#ll but never stopped going. It was a gasser that hauled dirt and gravel for landscaping. Seems any 1/2 ton could do that and/or handle remodeling work. Body panels can be easily fixed or replaced while still leaving the truck usable.

My outlook on having a diesel is to use it for its full potential especially when you look at the cost. I didn't want my trucks "because they are diesel", but because I "need" them to be. My '92 is Butt ugly but still runs as good as when I got it and easily hauls 15K or a pallet of bricks in the bed. These are not your 'drive ' to work trucks but trucks you work.

But hey, thats just my opinion. If you want to spend $40-$50K to just look good while driving to work then thats your business :)

Bring her on down before/after aquiring it. We'll put her in the garage and give her a once over. Then you can see all the projects I have going on.
