OK guys,

I've been having many conversations with my diesel friends so i wanted to see what the experts have to say. I have a lifted 04. 5 dodge with a bunch of trinkets on it. 4 inch lift with 35 inch BFG's, Big hoss bundle, 50hp injectors and stock auto-transmission but have a pro-weld transmission cooler with fan filled with amsoil fluid. I pull a raptor toy-hauler with it on the weekends. It has tons of power but the transmission is very hard to keep cool. When in traffic it i can see upwards of 230 degrees on the banks programmer I also have a mag-hyte transmission pan with a gauge installed in it and i'm reading about 190 when the banks says 230. 1st question is where is the banks PDA getting its signal from in the transmission. Output fluid of the transmission is what i'm thinking.

Second. Does anyone know of a good transmission builder in the Dallas Texas area? I want to get the trany built up because i want to put twin turbos on it soon and i'm tired of heating up the trany every-time i pull my trailer with it. I

seen allot of posts on this site and find allot of them hard to believe. Dodge trucks seem to run allot hotter EGT's then the competition. In stock form i have seen 1400 degrees in my truck but only for a short period. After the banks install 1200 max at wide open, but it will creep up higher pulling a loaded camper in overdrive, you have to watch yourself with the throttle. And last thing. Why do they have a tow mode on the trany. Every time i use it my temp increases in the transmission and the trucks engine is screaming at 65 mph. I guess they don't want you to go highway speeds while pulling a camper. Now i am a mechanic, i've done every mode on my truck myself and i drive tractor trailers part-time so i know allot about diesels and how to drive them. I'm just wondering what you all are thinking? Thanks

A stock trans will not last long with any mods, unless its just exhaust and a air cleaner. If you live near Illinois I have a great Trans shop.

You should try the Smarty. They advertise the lowest EGT's in the industry. The horsepower is for real and many members can vouch for it by proving it on the dyno. Downside is that some members complain of smoke issues. I have one myself, and personally I don't experience any excess smoke. The smoke problem seemed to be happening with members that had the old software. If you get one with the most up to date software you should be good to go. The cool thing is, it will work great with the bigger injectors and will also work well when you add your twins. You can also adjust for bigger tires with it and read engine codes. I love mine. I went with the Smarty Jr for myself, but with the mods you're thinking of i'd probably go with the regular Smarty. I also think an upgraded exhaust with twins will help your egt's alot. As far as the transmission goes, BD and ATS make great aftermarket upgrades for trannys.

First off, your truck doesn't really have a TH option. Its marked as such but it really an OD lockout. You go from . 69 OD ratio to 1:1 in drive and yes it will scream if you your rolling at speed. :D You want to keep it OD over 55 mph and only use your TH in slower traffic. Keeping the TC locked in drive or OD is going to do more for your temps than anything else.

The Banks is reading the temp from the factory sensor that is mounted on the VB in the pan. The ECU is responsible for setting that signal that corresponds to temp. They never seem to be close as you can see and I think it is because it is an expected reading rather than actual, like the engine temp and charge gauge. FYI, you really want your trans temp probe to be reading out of the hot line to the cooler, front cooler line on the trans, to track your highest readings and when you need to shift or lock the TC.

The 35's are not helping the temp either but they do look nice. You will need trans work sooner or later as the stock pressures and setup suffer with added power and bigger tires.

Cummins spec's the motors for EGT's and builds them to run at the temps the do. Mostly its emissions.
