Coming in to work at 5:30 this morning I found a patch of black ice as I was approacing the highway from the county road I live on. I was only going about 20MPH but when I hit my brakes, my truck spun completely around and came to a stop right at the edge of the highway with a semi going by. Scared the you know what out of me.

After I started breathing again I wondered why the antilock brakes didn't work. I guess I'm wondering if this truck is supposed to have them? Front, rear or both?

The truck is a 98. 5 3500 4x4.

easy way to tell is if the abs light comes on when u first start the truck. it does it's own self check and then it goes off. no light = no abs

Don't know about your 4x4, but my 1996 3500 4x2 had rear antilock brakes. 4-wheel antilock brakes were optional - don't believe they became standard until 2001. 5 along with the 4-wheel disc brakes, but I could be wrong.

I think you should have antilock brakes...

I'm not sure when 4-wheel anti-lock brakes started on the 3500's. I thought it was the 98. 5 models. I know my 2001 with drum brakes have them. That was the major reason I couldn't use the Abbot box to correct my speedometer, because I would have had to buy two of them, one for the front brakes and one for the rear (went with the "Superlift TruSpeed Sensor Calibrator - 98 up Dodge 4WH ABS"). The description of the TruSpeed seems to indicate it's 98 models and later.

I'll have to check the idiot lights this afternoon when I head home.

RADdodge: I just checked out the pictures of your truck. That is one nice looking rig. I love the big wheels and tires. I really wanted a red dually but the one I have is green. Maybe I'll get it repainted some day. Oo.

I have the same truck and mine has rear anti-lock.

Edit:eek:oooops didn't read that far, mine is a 4X2. Sharp eye Rad!

I think was the year that 4 wheel abs was mandatory by dot on vehicles w/10k rating or higher my truck has 4 wheel (ALWAYS B. S. ) and it was not optional.

I don't need abs at 90mph I need it at 9 mph on ice.
