My 2000 reaches 180 within 5 miles with no cold front and an outside temp of -10.

Jhillmann,
I gotta talk to you. I wonder what kind of thermo they put in your truck?? Sounds like it warms up as fast as a gas motor with an electric fan. That would be great!!

Ramboat, your truck acts like every Diesel I've ever used. I also have 90% of my rad blocked. If you don't work em. . they don't warm up. Like BG said, it'll cool off when idling.

I had my thermostat replaced today old one (3 weeks old )started leaking like the other 3 in the last 4 months. the old one would come up to 190 in 7 - 10 mi of 4% down hill fwy and stay at 190. This new one hits 190 in traffic and at a stop lite the temp goes to low end of normal to go back up to 190 by 3rd gear. this one does not leak ( yet ) but what a piece of $h__, I guess I would make a good summer towing t stat.

sounds normal here too! i have about 80% of my radiator blocked off, and still takes a while to warm up. diesels have a lot of cast iron in there to get warm #ad

although i must say that i drive PSD's at work, and they warm up much quicker than my cummins, hhhmmmm maybe less iron... less of an engine... oh! sorry i was thinking outloud again #ad

My engine takes forever to warm up, about 10 miles at 20 to 25 degrees ambient to reach 180 degrees. I have the radiator blocked off with only a 10% opening remaining as recommended. Once it does start registering on the gauge, the temperature will drop if the engine is allowed to idle for more than a minute.

I'm beginning to wonder if my thermostat is closing completely.

This is normal for the Cummins. It will cool off at idle in a lot warmer temperature than where you are. Your thermostat is ok. bg

Ramboat, I have had the same problem with my trucks when they idle in cold weather. I have an exhaust brake on my truck now and when it is that cold and I need to idle the truck, I just turn the exhaust brake on and the engine temp will stay up. I do worry about the EGT's getting too high though so I do cycle the brake if I am going to idle for an extended period of time.

Well the PSD does have one thing up on us in the warm up department. They have an exhaust brake like flap that closes when the engine is cold and therefore helps the motor to warm up. My roomate has a 95 PSD and it warms up ALOT faster than my cummins. Of course with the PSD being straight piped it sounds like a huge tire deflating when the flap is engaged.
