sounds like bill is correct , your reverse problem is the same as your 3rd gear problem , they both use the same set of clutches in the high gear drum . minimum is to pull the trans and pull out the front pump and clutch packs , check them both , you will probably find the steels discolored and the clutches a bit thin , also check the seals in the high gear drum , the factory seal can allow fliud to get past which does not hold the clutches as tight as they would like . what year and how many miles , a VB would be a good idea , its the reverse /drive of snowplowing that can be real harsh on a stock auto .

Hey Mopar!
Thanks for your reply. I have 80,000km (50M miles) on the transmission and about 6,000 miles on the DTT TC and VB. Do you think line pressure at 80psi could have blown the seal?
Bill will build me a transmission with his tc and vb in it plus whatever beefed up internals he uses, plus give me full refund for my TC/VB since they are basically new. I think this is a good route to go since the covertor could be contaminated. I checked the shift linkage and TV cable adjustment and everything is ok.

I went to Toronto to pick up my truck after leaving it with my Dad for a few weeks. He had done a bit of hauling with it and told me the trans wasn't shifting properly. Sure enough, the trans doesn't want to shift to 3rd, and when it does, it slips and shifts in and out of 2-3 and 3-4. The other symptom is a delay in reverse. Fluid condition and volume is ok. Dropping the pan revealed about 5cc of grey (mud) stuck to the bottom of the pan. Bill K (the man) thinks a clutch pack is toasted, or the seal is gone, allowing the fluid to bypass. Any thoughts or ideas? Scan tool did not reveal much. Has anyone else blown clutch packs so soon? Would you rebuild the clutch packs or go with a new (rebuilt) trans? I'm concerned with contaminants getting through the rest of the system, so I'm leaning toward getting Bill to build me a new trans to install. I just need help in ruling out any other possibilites (ie electrical) before I pour so much cash into this thing. I don't tow, but I do some plowing, so reverse gets more use than normal, but still, the dodge service manager doesn't think the trans is to blame. He suspects electrical, or a stuck vb valve, but these theories don't explain the reverse problem. By the way, I'm off warranty.
