I had a strange thing happen to me yesterday. I went to a reputable exhaust shop to have flanges put on my Cat so I can swap it in and out easily for inspection (NJ).

I told the mechanic what I wanted to do and he asked "Why would you want to do that?" So I told him, and he said to not even waste my time and money because it's not even really a catalytic converter, but a spark arrestor. He told me that I will pass easily as long as there is no check engine light on and NJ does not test emissions on diesels. I also told him that I can see a honey comb inside it and the exhaust smells differently when it's installed. He told me that he's taken hundreds of them off diesels and the scrap yard only gives him $5 for the steel and there's no platinum in them like gasser cats. He also said I'd have a hell of a time finding 4" flanges because he can't get them in stainless.

I'm not sure I believe all of this. Has anyone else heard of such a thing?

well i have an 06 and i can tell you it IS a cat! big and brown (rust) and has the honeycome in it. so being a diesel... ... . what kind of sparks would a spark arrestor stop? mega cabs have resonators, but we have cats. all i know is the scrap yard is working him over hard core.

Never listen to the idiot at the muffler shop! They know nothing about a diesel. All of the ones I have checked out don't even stock, and can not bend, 4" pipe. One genious told me I should leave my cat on cause the diesel's need the backpressure! WHAM!

Sounds like the guy was trying to make a $$ on you thinking you'd give him the cat.

My neighbor told me mine was worth almost $200 in scrap value a while ago... he scraps cars and knows his business. He still drools every time he sees it sitting in the corner!!

Is it only Megacabs that have resonators? If so, why?

Yes only the mega's have resonators. . probably the proximity of the cab to the tailpipe?

I have a mega resonator on my truck, along with no kitty and a Donaldson 40". . Its a great sound.

I pounded all the s*** out of mine and rewelded it back on to the Silverline turbo back system, look legal anyway.

I can tell you this much on a stock 05 325/610 motor the thing really came alive. On mornings my thermostat takes over 4 additional freeway miles before it opens:eek:. Not to mention added throttle responce.

Take one off and look inside and youd be amazed the truck can even run with one of those little boogers.

Mac:cool:

I always noticed that it seemed to "soot up" if you didn't run it hard once in a while...

I cruise the interstate for many miles and the truck would start acting doggish... if I would do a single WOT run, it would leave a very, unusually large, black cloud and then it would run fine for a while until it did it again. I always felt it was plugging off with soot, and it needed cleaned out...

I was under the impression cats needed oxygen to work correctly, the reason most cars have a smog pump on them. I wonder if the cat gets hot enough without getting the added air from a smog pump?? Sort of like how the DPFs need to "regenerate"??

Mine ran away shortly after... its been sitting in the corner ever since, just in case I would ever need it again.

Mine ran off to the attic for the same reason, and I need to do the same with my dads...

There is a guy at work who's truck will billow black smoke if he gets on it, my guess is it's hit cat being plugged...

Mine does this. If I drive it like n old lady (just cruising interstate back and forth to work) and then get on it, I billow black smoke..... I had a lady yesterday (ironically in a Prius) waving her arms in front of her face as if to clear the smoke away. Maybe if she had been paying attention I wouldn't have had to smoke screen her in the first place!

No muffler man in his right mind would flange a cat. That would be considered tampering with the emissions equipment. Big fines for him.

Mine will seem to clog up too, gettin' on it, cleans it out, lots of black smoke. Since I live in Prius-land, I always wait until I have one behind me to clean the CAT out. I had a guy in a Prius I smoked follow me a couple miles, when I stopped he leaped out of his car swearing at me and screaming as loud as he could. I asked him very quietly to get back in his car and leave me alone, told him he needed to do his homework about diesels. He just kept swearing at me until he was just about right up in my face. I once again asked him to get in his car and leave me alone. He then pushed me into my truck, I pulled out my CC weapon and told him to leave before things got a little less green in his life and that I would treat his lead deficiency in a second or two if he did not just get in his car and leave me alone. He left.
