I'm real close to buying propane for my truck, but I was just wondering if there were any potential dangers before I jump. I have hear how happy it has made the people who have bought it, but I wanted to see if there was anyone not pleased with their system.
thanks,
cody

Keep your power increases to no more than 90 to 100 hp and you'll be all right. I have personal knowledge of at least a half dozen Cummins engines blown-up due to improper use of propane.

Is it harmful??? If you sniff it maybe! #ad

Probably the most dangerous physical property of propane is that it is heavier than air, and therefore will collect in low area's that constitute a confined space.

It is also very explosive under the 'right' conditions. I had the misfortune of lighting a propane furnace that had been leaking propane into the furnace combustion chamber (a confined space). To make a long story short, I made a trip to the local ER to have my arm stitched up due to one of the doors being violently blown off the furnace. Also we never did find the vent pipe rain cap... it's probably now a piece of space junk being tracked by NASA.

Propane is great, just make sure you get some product support wherever you buy. You should be OK if you don't modify the system for more power, otherwise you takes your chances and you could pay the price. Look for good quality components that won't be prone to failure.

One big concern would be exposing the propane to the grid heater. Notice the engine warning regarding use of starting fluids; you're doing about the same thing when using a propane system. I would think disconnecting the grid heater electrical feed would be a good safety precaution whenever a propane system is being used.

By the way, propane only ignites in concentrations of between 2. 4% and 9. 6% of gas to air and needs temperatures of at least 920 to 1020 degrees for ignition.

Does anybody know how hot the grid heater gets when it is in operation? From the looks of it it when I had the intake manifold removed it dosen't get to hot, it was'nt oxidized or turned blue from heat. TIA

Happy New Year! #ad

The propane systems have 2 safety systems built into them to address the grid heater problem. (at least BullyDog has) First, you have to hit a toggle switch that lights up when the system is on.

Second, They supply a Hobbs pressure switch that won't allow the propane solenoid to OPEN until 8 lbs boost. They are adjustable.

Common sence says to wait till the truck is warmed up to turn on the propane in the winter months.

My grid heater has only really came on at START, IDLE and cycled at light throttle for a 1/2 mile at best (very cold conditions). This is with no measurable boost reading on my gauge.

I'm no LP expert. Someone correct me if I'm wrong #ad
