Was set to order Schaeffer 9000 syn oil for my 07 5. 9 and found out the Schaeffer is CJ 4+, the 07 5. 9 calls for CI 4 or CI 4+. Rep says it is backwards compatible and is the newer better oil. What are ya'll thoughts on this. ??

AS long as it meets this spec: Cummins CES 20081 it should be OK.

OK now you got me intriqued, never heard of the CUMMINS CES 20081, so fill me in. So I could assume the Amsoil meets the spec, but I wanted to go with a 5/40 and Amsoil is either 15/40 or 5/30 I believe.

John Martin has written a series of excellent articles on oil in the last couple of TDR issues. I think beginning with 55 and going through 58 or somewhere around there. Read these articles and I think you might decide to stay with CI 4+

"CES" is a Cummins Engineering Specification, and 20081 is the latest in a series. I beleive it relates and addreses SOOT, Whereas the API Spec. such as API CJ-4 or CI-4+ are Performance specs put out by the Amserican Petrolium Institute, and CJ-4 is the latest spec. of the API. Amsoil does make a 5W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel oil that meets API CJ-4 as well CES 20081. The CI-4+ and CI-4 oils that Amsoil makes do not meet the CES 20081, but do meet the earlier CUMMINS specs.

In my opinion, the CJ-4 oils are as good as the CI-4+ and CI-4 oils, but should be drained at shorter intervals, unless of course you do regular oil analysis, which may allow longer drain intervals.

I'm not an expert in this area (or any other, for that matter) but, my take on the CJ-4, CI-4+ controversy is that the new CJ-4 does not have the strong additive package to handle the byproducts from LSD fuel. The CI-4+ was LOADED with a strong additive package to handle the sulphur & resulting byproducts from the combustion event.

My thinking is that if you are running ULSD & using the CJ-4, you probably are going to have a good experience with it. However, if you are still running LSD, the CJ-4 probably will not work as long as the old CI-4+. If running the LSD, it may be a good idea to change the oil at 5000 mile intervals. You may not want to try extended oil drain intervals.

The base oils in the new CJ-4 is supposed to be stronger than the older CI-4+.

Hope this helps.
