My '03 CTD H/O has 23,000 miles on it and

I have changed my oil only 3 times and each

time the oil has only been slightly stained,

I feel somewhat guilty for draining perfectly

good oil. The truck doesn't perform any work,

just city driving and some road trips. When

my 2 year free dealership servicing runs out

I am going extend the servicing intervals.

The dealer uses Mopar 15w40. I change air

filters and fuel filters much more often

than recommended, if nothing else other than

to accomplish cleaner fuel burning.

Something to ponder as well is that heat causes oil, especially synthetics, to darken. The color of the oil isn't necessarily an indicator of clean or dirty oil.

Jeeze - some of you guys will go to ANY length to alibi for dark oil , woncha! ;) :D :p

Strange, MY 5000+ mile oil is still clear as new - maybe I just don't get it "hot" enough... :D :D

Golden oil

My oil's still golden too and I have 40,000 miles on my truck. It's a little dark at 7500 miles, which is my change point. I use Mobil 5/40 synthetic.

You are absolutley Correct!

My last oil analysis taken on 4-13-04 showed the soot @ 0. 01. My oil had 21,000 miles on it at that time, and currently has 24,000 on the oil now. Truck has 31,500 miles now. All "wear" metals were OK with exception of Copper, which was higher than normal, but figure the high reading is coming from the oil coller, as it is all Copper. ALL of the other "wear Metals" were good. I did change the oil filters after the analysis came back, but not the oil as it is still in great shape.

I do use By-pass filtering as well. Oil is still fairly "clear", if you consider being able to see through the oil and seeing the marks on the stick, but the color is darker than "new" from the container.

cool. those seem pretty good for 20,000 miles. does the bypass filter have any measureable and verifiable benefit in that regard?

DLeno

The Amsoil BE-100 By-pass is rated 99. 8 % @ 5u useing SAE J1858 test method for efficiency.

just trying to see if there is any benefit to the bypass filter as regards silica levels. this is in place of the factory spin-in filter, correct? pardon my ignorance. I'm sure the bypass filter is a better system than the spin-on.

For the extended drain interval, the bulk properties, chemistries, and soot levels in the oil, are controllable with additives, base stock, , etc. , but the silica levels come from the air intake system and keep increasing the longer you run without draining. unless of course they too are filtered

silica levels in the upper teens @ 20,000 miles is not scary, just "not inconsistent" with what I would expect from a factory system. This may be because SAE J726 fine dust test for air filtration, thought to be consistent with the particle distribution of highway driving, suggests a large percentage of particles below 5 microns.

Or maybe it's just that awesome TP oil filter you created that keeps your oil so clean. :D The Amsoil 15W40 HD Marine I just put in was already darker than any other oil I've ever seen. Again, one can tell, if they look close enough, the difference between a dirty oil (dark and opaque) and a dark colored oil (dark and translucent). Just offering another point of view. ;)
