After reading th threads about winter warm up I guess I am paying more attention. I have noticed that sometimes I hear the buzzing sound of what I assume is the preheater and sometimes I don't. The "wait before starting" light seems to stay on aout the same amount of time either way. Is this normal??

BTW . . . first time posting and as usual I have been lurking in the shadows learning alot about the CTD. ;)

Fuel pump......

If you turn the key on your fuel pump should run for a few seconds. If you bump the starter and not start the engine it will run about 20 seconds or so. That's probably thje noise your hearing.

Hmm. . . I would expect the lift pump to run every time I start the engine??? However, it seems likes there is no rhyme or reason to when mine runs. How long would you expect the pressure to hold?

Lift pump is always running with the engine...

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? It's highly advisable on these trucks. They have been known to have lift pump problems.

The lift pump will kick on with the key being turned and shut off at pressure. Usually 2 or 3 seconds. When you bump the starter it will run for longer to prime the system after a filter change etc. Once the truck is started it will run to feed the VP44.

Anyway was this the Buzz you heard???
