I've got 8 psi at idle, if you rev up the engine it goes to around 3 psi. Dodge house tells me it need replacing, but it not under warrenty, I've got 40,000 miles. They would be more than happy to replace it for $500. Then made some reference to my PE causing the lift pump to go south. If anything it would be easier on the lift pump, lower back pressure.

If I can't get this thing fixed under warrenty, I'm thinking of using a Holley blue pump that I have sitting on the work bench. How does that sound?

The lift pump is actually covered under the emissions warranty ~70K miles if you can believe it. I saw it with my own eyes in the warranty book. If you have a problem email me at stevest@voyager.net and I'll get you the exact page number out of the warranty book.

Thanks, I'll try again tomorrow at a different dealer. Then go back to the dealer I was at yeterday and rub there faces in it. To think I was thinking of buying my next truck there.

One more thing, would it be a good idea to take the PE off for my dealer visit. I know it didn't cause the lift pump to go bad, but I'm not sure if I can convice them of that. I feel kinda weird about debombing for warrenty work. Not that I haven't done it before.

Swayze, I had mine replaced under warranty. Check my post of 12/18. E Mail me if you need any details.

Called costomer service, and they said it wasn't under warrenty, told them to keep looking. After being on hold for a while she came back and said it was under warrenty for 5 years or 50,000 miles. Didn't really want to go back to the dealer that refused warrenty work, but I'm bringing it to them tomorrow. I went to two other dealers to see it they would warrenty it, they wouldn't even look at it. One said 8# sounds about right, and the other said if the fuel pump was bad it would turn on the Check Engine light. Guess I can't complain too much about a dealer that wanted to charge me for warrenty work, at least they looked at it.

Funny thing. The dealer that said 8# sounded about right, told me about some recalls on 2000 to 2001 models, for bad pumps. I told him that mine was a 2001, then he changed his story and said that the 1998 to 2000 had the bad lift pumps. I hate dealing with warrenty, don't think I'm ever buying a new truck again.

Sounds to me they really don't know what they're talking about. Should have said" I'm sorry I do not know, but I'll find out. "

But instead you get made up half truths, mixed in with BS!

My lift pump went out at around 10 thousand miles. It was reading ZERO, yes ZERO fuel pressure at idle. We took the pump off and put power to it and the blades inside were spinning but It wasnt pumping any fuel. However I did get warranty to replace it.

bring this back to the top.

I have an appointment with the dealer for the trailer hitch recall on Monday, I told them the lift pump will hit 0 under load and I think its bad. I asked them "is it under warrantee?" they said "I will call you back".
That was monday, its now Friday and they have not called.

I called DC to ask them, and told them that according to my 98 Warrantee book, the Fuel Injection System is covered for 5 years, 100,000 miles, they said "but the lift pump is only covered for 3yr/36K" I told them "That figures, I am real sorry that the Cummins is only avalable in a Dodge, because thats the only reason I bought this truck!"

------------------
I just called the dealer back, they said they faxed the question to Star and have not heard back yet. He was going to contact them again this morning.
------------------
Here is more info, I called Cummins, they said its Dodge's warrantee and they don't have any info, but if it was a Cummins warranted engine, it would be covered.
He also said Max of 6psi cranking, min of 10 psi all the running (all the time)or you will cause injection pump failure!!!!!!
-------------------
Just to make it more confusing, the dealer just called me and said the pump IS covered under the 100,000 mile warrantee!

The lift pump is definitely considered covered as part of the engine warranty, 100,000 miles. The dealers are just idiots.

Ok Ok - I'm obviously not getting the picture. Help me understand what the lift pump is. The oonly ones I'm familiar with are on flood control levees for interior drainage (rain)! I'm mechaniocal - but not a professional mechanic - please give me a lesson on lift pumps.

Thanks

the lift pump:
Location: DS of block, back around the starter:
What it does: It sucks fuel out of the fuel tank, sends it through the fuel filter to the injection pump. The whole idea is to supply much more fuel then the injection pump could ever need. BECAUSE the extra fuel cools the injection pump! What fuel the injection pump does not need, goes back to the fuel tank. The fuel that is returned to the tank also helps to heat the fuel the rest of the fuel in the tank during the cold winter months.

TowPro - thanks so much for the info. By the eway - I was raised in Central Pa - DuBois. Been out in the Pacific Northwest for 30 years. While this is my new home. all my relatives are buried in Pa, and I'll never forget the great things I learned there in Potter and Clinton County - Hence my "handle" Hammersley. If you're a fisherman - that's a great little stream that flows into Kettle Creek.

what year is your truck? I have been told the warranty is different for different years.
