Is the silencer ring really for noise or?

The silencer ring looks more like a smoothing funnel for the incoming air to flow more smoothly into the inlet of the turbo. From my days of racing this is what I would first believe it is there for. Cannot believe that removing this ring would provide any engine performance improvement or torque increase. Any comments on this subject are sure welcomed. Thanks for your input. Tony G LI,NY

It does not provide any performance improvement,increase mpg or anything. It is only there for noise,you don't hear the turbo whine as much. I have taken it out on every truck I have had. Do a search on this and you will find out. If you don't beleve us call Cummins. You hear the whine on big trucks,they don't have them. This is the result of one of Dodges great *&#@# engineers. I have never noticed any gain or loss removing it,just more whine. These engines are put in other applications and they don't have it. If you think it improves the air flow then leave it in.

Can someone tell me what the silencer ring is and what it does. .

also... where is it located ?

The silencer ring is in the inlet of the turbo. If you remove the hose going from the air cleaner to the turbo off and look into the turbo you'll see a funnel shaped piece of metal with a snap ring holding it in, that's the silencer ring. It is put there to smooth out the flow of incoming air and direct it into the turbo (one opinoin) the other reason it is there is to quiet down the whine or whistle of the turbo when you're accelerating or on decel (with a manual trans). Some people like the whistle, some don't

If you take it out and want to put it back make sure that snap ring is fully seated or its good by turbo as the ring will be pulled into the blades a new ring is best bet if in doupt. Ron in Louisville Ky

I have put the silencer ring in and out several times and finally have decided to leave it out so I can hear the turbo spool up and down. It would seem that a venturi affect on the incoming air is the purpose for the ring, but according to Cummins, it is only there to deaden the turbo-spooling sound. It's up to you! Sam

I took my silencer ring out and noticed that my truck didn't really take off until a higher rpm. With the ring in it would take off at about 2,200 rpm, but with it out I didn't feel the same response until about 2,500 rpm.
