Is the vacuum pump only for cruise control?

can i progam my 04 to shift like an 06?

The only other thing I know it's used for is some applications use it as part of the exhaust brake install. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The small eletric pump cannot create enough vacuum to operate much of anything else besides the cruise controll in fact it seems that it does not that much of a problem and there is not enough vaccum to operate the cruise control. I have had the vacuum pump replaced under warrranty once already because it stopped making enough vaccuum when out on the road going up hills needed a lot to keep up.



As far as the HVAC vents they are operated by small electric motors these days.
 
In the 03-04 automatic transmission system there was still a cable from the part of the TPS unit to the transmission for control of the kink-down type function and the cruise control was done with a vacuum operated servo with a cable to the TPS unit like to old days. It was because of this cable to TPS connection that adding the programming in the 04 ECM that controlled both the engine and automatic transmission to use the servo unit to run up the idle speed using the cruise control system already in place.
