Is there a difference (besides the color) between diesel fuel and #2 heating oil. The reason I ask is because I sometimes am able to put fuel in my truck at work (free of charge sometimes :D ) but it is #2 heating oil. Will this harm anything? Will I have to change the fuel filter more often? or Is it the same as diesel only with red dye and no tax? I haven't used any yet; wanted to ask first.

I am not a expert but I would say from my experiences around my neck of the woods that if the fuel you are able to get for free is free of the road tax and you were to be pulled over and checked that fine that is levied will buy lots of fuel. If its red its not supposed to be ran on the highway. I have a Red fuel tank At my shop for the skid steer and there is no way I would even touch that for over the road use. I do know of folks who have gotten bit hard. :)

The only difference I can think of would be the sulfur content. Otherwise the fuels are pretty much the same.

Watch your back on the color though... if you run red fuel on-road... be prepared to pay if you get caught.

Supposedly, around here, officers of whatever agency has been going to livestock sales barns on sale day, and dipping something into fuel tanks of farm trucks. If it comes out the wrong color, they wait till the owner comes out and the writing starts. Haven't seen it, only what I have heard. I have heard it can be expensive if your caught with the farm fuel in your truck on the highway.

Down side of JET A or B is that there is NO lubrication so if you use it on a 24V be prepared to use lots of DFA...

Generally no difference except color. We always ran #2 heating oil in our diesels before the clear stuff came about.

Back then it could be red, green, yellow - mostly yellow I recall. Probably different codes used by the refiners.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I probably won't use it as I don't want to risk the fine if I get caught.

The fire department I work for uses heating oil (tax exempt) as fuel for the apparatus and we have had no fuel related troubles in any of our trucks during the 7 years I have been there.

There is virtually no diffrence. Some fuel companies even mix #2 with normal diesel fuel because it lowers the gelling temperature. As long as it isn't red you will have no trouble.
