I added the Sylvania Silverstars to my 01 Sport. The added "whiteness" of the bulbs does make seeing easier. They don't seem to add any increased distance. I feel they are worth the money.

I also got the Silverstars. They help a little but the illumination is still pityfull. I have a pair of KC Dayliters, they light up the road for a good 1/2 mile. I have them switched through a relay to work with the high beams. When I dip the high beams to low beam and they go off, man..... seams like the factory lights are not working. I think if you want to see good you have to get some driving lights.

Install a light kit from Summit Racing. It feeds the lights, through relays, directly from the batteries. Makes a lot of diference! Also sheds the load from the light switch.

Y-Not swears by the wiring harness from Summit Racing. I've got one on order, but they're back ordered until 10/18/04. The whole idea of upgrading an inferior electrical supply to the lights makes sense. If after the harness is installed I still need more light then I'll change bulbs. After I get the harness installed I'll post results. I also like diesel4power's setup with driving lights that come on and off with the hi-beams. Jim

Paul Is it possible for you to E-Mail me how you hooked your switch up to the high beam side. I am trying to do what you have done. I have a post in this forum (another wiring problem) asking for info but the only reply I got I couldn't follow. Thank You Harry

I tried the "Super White" bulbs and didn't like them. Made everything too blue. I bought regular halogens that are 120/55 watts from JC Whitney. I think they were $12 each. They made a big difference.

I hooked some driving lights up on another truck with a three position toggle switch that made them either come on with the high beams, come on when any light was on, or not come on at all. All I did was to tie into one of the high beam hot wires and the hot wire to one of the running lights, run those to the switch, one on one side and one to the other, and then from the switch to the solenoid for the driving lights. Worked real nice. I don't know the proper name for the switch but it had three positions, on-off-on and three terminals(I think!) on the back.

Good luck!

Scott

Just as stated - any direct plug in replacements that are brighter than the factory gave me on my '01. 5?

I swapped my factory bulbs to Eurolite Xenon Fusion (9004SB - HEADLIGHT BULB NEW FUSION) from Toucan Industries. They provide a brighter/whiter light than stock. The combination of headlights and fog lights even out the white/yellow light to a nice tone.

I also replaced the factory backup bulbs with 20107 - 50 Watt Halogen Super Bright Back-Up Bulb 3156 style.

Both of those were sourced from Murrays Automotive

I would not compare either with auxillary lights but they provide a significant improvement over factory bulbs.

I do not know the details of the Summit kit but www.suvlilghts.com has a nice, almost 100%, plug and play wiring harness with relays to take the load off the headlight circuit and provide full power to the lights. I think it is around $45.

I used Hella 80w/100w 9004 halogens from ralley lights number 78149 I think. I replaced silver stars and it made a huge difference, i can finally see.

Before you buy bulbs, particularly any blue-tinted bulbs, please do yourself a favor and read these articles. Very informative. The main thing is to beware of "SilverStars". There appears to be right ones and wrong ones.

FWIW,

That is an excellent article! I stumbled across it when I was looking for an upgrade. The mix of fog and headlights combines into a good light color, brighter without being too white.

I have the Brite Box and it does help but still not enough light for dark country roads! My wifes Toyota Scion's stock head lights throw twice the light than my truck does,,,, and that's WITH the Brite Box!

I'm also considering the wiring harness upgrade. I wonder if the Brite Box can still be used after the new harness has been installed?

If I ever get the extra cash for a good after market bumper like the Buck Stop, I'll definitely add some quality road lights and take care of another one of DC's engineering blunders.
