2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Is there a different bulb for headlights that is brighter?

I am planning on doing the Summit kit on my truck and adding new bulbs. Which bulbs would be best to go with. Looking for something like the Silverstars. I have fog lights too and would like to make sure the bulbs for the headlights and fog lights are the same. Also an other question. My truck did not come with fog lights from the factory and I made them put factory Mopar fog lights on before I took the truck. The relay for the lights is attached to the fender. Do these lights still pull power off the headlight switch and what is the highest power bulb I can expect to use. Thanks in advance.

It all depends on how your non-OEM "factory" Mopar fog lamps have been wired.



OEM fog lamps model year 2002 have a fog lamp relay in the PDC, the only purpose of the relay being to act as an interlock that prevents the fog lamps from being powered when high beams are selected. The fog lamp relay is wired as a normally closed relay. When high beams are selected the relay opens. The last modification shown on this page (thanks Dave Fritz) will also work model year 2002. The jumper defeats the open-when-high-beams-are-selected contacts of the fog lamp relay. The contacts of the fog lamp relay are in series with the fog lamp portion of the headlight switch. All 75 watts of power that the OEM fog lamps use is seen by the headlight switch.

Dan recommended higher efficiency bulbs in my Sport headlights. Higher lumins and same wattage. He recomended NOT to use overwattage bulbs in these plastic lamps. There are two dual filament bulbs in each Sport headlight - with only 1 of the low beams ever working. The other low is aimed wrong in the housing to be energized.



He also recomended , of course, the wiring kit to power the headlights and a complete replacement of the fogs to a Bosch replacement with high efficiency bulbs. This company is very quality concious and highly informed about our trucks requirements.



I still have yet to get these in the mail but I need more light and hope this setup will give it to me. I'll post again and give you all the scoop when I get it done - Eric

I have been an avid believer in Daniel Stern's writings since I discovered his site a couple of years ago. Very helpful in getting my sport light conversion planned out. However, I've been running higher wattage bulbs in the sport lights with no problem. I've wired it it to keep the low beams on with the high beams, and can even turn on the unused second filament in the low beam bulb. It seems to direct the light straight ahead but a bit high and may be a problem for someone you're following, so I only use them out of town.



BTW: I accidently ordered the wrong set of replacement bulbs the other day and I don't need them. These are the in-board 9004 high beam bulbs. They are Hellas rated at 80w/100w. Cost me $21 for the pair plus a little for shipping. PM me if you're interested.



Without question the sport conversion with the separate wiring harness and relays and the higher wattage bulbs are the best lighting you can imagine as compared to the original single bulb set up. Just stay away from ANY blue tinted bulbs. You're wasting your money.

I installed the Summit kit. I already had the Silverstars in and did not notice a huge improvement in light output. But, I did notice that my light switch is much cooler then before. My . 02

Didn't notice much difference either, then my Summit Harness took a dump and I am waiting on a replacement... not too happy.

I hope i'm not off topic here. Is there an H. I. D kit for our trucks that would work. I relize some of these kits are expensive but headlights seem to be a good upgrade, and you get that neat blue look.

Daniel is highly respected in lighting circles and appears to know what he is talking about. Basically, blue color, more glare for oncoming drivers, less light for you to see by. I knew I hated those blue lights coming at me for a reason and now I know why they blind me so much! Good luck RSeargeant!
