i've posted this in products accessories, but i posted here as well as there doesn't seem to be much action over there... .

title says it all but i'll restate... . is there an upgrade/customization i can have someone do to the dash of my 98. 5 so that i can have a more modern radio/nav in dash so it is more like my wife's modern suv?

thanks in advance...

I know some of the aftermarket stereo companies make cd/dvd players that also have navigation capabilities. Unless you want a single DIN chassis with an adapter for the stock location, anything bigger would be custom work.

I saw an aftermarket product that had a screen that slid out from the radio's chassis for viewing, but I don't remember the manufacturer. I saw this 2-3 years ago.

A friend of mine installs stereos, he said the dodge is a DIN and a half size - not a single DIN or a double. Haven't had him do my truck just yet as I was waiting for a new system that can do nav stuff too.

Check the major manufacturers websites for their newest products as the car electronics industry just had its version of SEMA and all the new 09 stuff is coming out.

The dash is a din and a half, but scoshe makes a trim insert that will bolt right in to the existing mounts alowing you to install a din unit. I have ran an Alpine unit with a slide out 7" monitor that has navigation. Pioneer also makes a great nav unit with a hideaway unit that controls the navigation aspect and can also update realtime traffic through a service caled Navtraffic. I wold check out Crutchfield, with them you get the insert and the wire harness for free with the radio.

i've just started my search. the motorized screens aren't at the top of the list just yet as the screen would block the hvac vents at the top of the dash.

anyone know what a custom dash modification would run in norcal? how extensive would it have to be?

thanks to all you guys for the insights.

The dash opening would have to be opened up from din and a half to double din. It shouldn't be all that hard, however i believe this would have to be above the current opening. this would result in either eliminating/rerouting the center vents or possibly modifying them narrower. In the world of car audio, ANYTHING is possible! $$$$$$$

I bought a Kenwood flip-up nav, DVD, Sirius radio and rear camera from crutchfield.com. They have a good web site that will tell you if a particular product will fit your truck. Crutchfield is first rate. I love my Kenwood with the only drawback is the screen blocks the heater/ac outlets in the center of my dash. Not a big deal as you can retract the screen when you don't need it.
