When I first bought my truck, I cut the CAT off and left the muffler. It is now time for my first service interval and I was calling around to the different dealerships trying to find out what dealership is not so strict on the performance aspect. Every dealer I talked to, said that I have to leave the CAT on or warranty is VOID but I could put a larger diameter exhaust in. I live in a county that does not require emmisions so my question is this... Is there a high flowing CAT that I can put in place of the stock one and still keep my warranty and keep DODGE happy? Thanks for the input!

i was thinking about putting an aero turbine in place of mine, it looks like a cat. i think it was mbrp who just came out with there high flow, i saw it in one of the truck magazines, maybe diesel world or diesel power, i will check.

Can you just hollow it out???? I used to do that with chevy v8's for better flow. Cat is still there so as far as a visual inspection you look stock. The down side is if you have to emissions test, then your in trouble.

I'm pretty sure Magnaflow has a high flow cat. Diesel Power did an artical in there systems, they said they had 3 different cats, 1 for Dodge, 1 for Ford and 1 for the Chevy. They had pictures in the magazine but I didn't see anything on there web site a month or so ago.

I would like to know also. I took my cat off last year and I really like the sound but am a little afraid of warranty issues. I would like to know if anyone has bought one and from where.

Thanks Corey

Yes magnaflow does make cats for our trucks, im getting ready to order the 5 inch version for my system at 338. 00 dollors.

These cats have to be high flow or your EGT's would run to high if they were restricted like the gas motors. I could be dead wrong.

not dead wrong by any means, but they do create more restriction than if there were no cat at all...

but even if there were no restriction, I'd ditch the cat so it'll sound right!

why not just leave it on? Here is why I leave it alone. If not for us, why not for our kids?

Edit: But to answer the original post, Here is one place that sells them. All the way up to 12" inlet sizes!

Pro,

all it takes is one guy w/ a 12v w/ big injectors, a light AFC, and a #0 plate to floor his truck for about 5 seconds, and it'll put out more soot than a bone stock 3rd gen with the cat removed will put out in 100k miles...

it's a sinking ship... might as well jump off and have some fun! :p

... and 1 GOVERNMENT (city, state, military, . . ) bus or dump truck etc. will put out more soot in one day then that 12v big inj #0 plate will in it's lifetime!!!!

When I stop getting smoked out by city buses then maybe it'll make sense for us little performance gearheads to worry about emissions.

Seriously. Why is it always the little guy paying the price? Protest the poor emissions on city vehicles if you're serious about emissions and wanting to protect the environment. Damn buses belching sun obscuring clouds of black with ZERO or ONE passenger driving around 24hrs a day. THEY should get tickets for not carpooling! lol

.

Big Mak did you ever hit the nail on the head there, the diesel busses in the town I work are horrible. Those things belch nasty black unburnt fuel clouds every time they take off. Those things are horrible.

If you mean they don't require emissions equipment, that's not right.

ALL counties require emissions compliance; some of them just don't test for it because of high altitude, low population density or something. There are EPA criteria for what areas. In Arizona, the 2 main areas that require testing are Tuscon and Phoenix. I have a home in Flagstaff (7000 ft elevation and it's in Coconino County which is low population density). The Flagstaff area does not require testing.

Removing the cat violates Federal law and probably state law also.

There is a bit of a difference. Sure there's soot comming out of that old diesel bus (new buses don't do that), but it's better than if each one of the passengers were driving their own vehicle. Personally, I don't see what is unfair about the EPA saying that one person can't emit as much soot in their new tricked out truck as a 5 year old bus carring 30 passengers (they don't carry just one passenger throughout the day). The bus is on the road mostly so people can get to their jobs. A tricked out truck can do that, but so can a truck that has the factory cat. High performance joy riding is not in the EPA's charter.

A couple of notes. 1) I dynoed my '05 with and without the stock cat and it put down 345hp both with and without it. Each time we ran it at least 4 pulls just to make sure we had a good reading. We were surprised to see no increase in power w/o the cat but the truck didn't feel any different driving either so the numbers seem accurate.

2) I've bought several "high flow" cats for my cars and I have yet to see one that's any different than a stock cat converter. The only difference is in the brick/body size. There are some "true" high flow cat converters but they cost around $2000.

Save your money, the stock diesel cat is absolutely huge anyway and will flow plenty of air. The only time I'd worry about it being a restriction is if you're at 450whp or higher and then I'm only guessing that it's a restriction. It's not a restriction at 350whp anyway. Also, I only see a difference in egt of "maybe a maximum" of 50*F pre-turbo between cat/no cat. I expected to see bigger egt relief without it but it just didn't happen, even pulling rocky mountain passes.
