Hello again TDR gurus,

Working on getting a service manual for my 2010 Dodge RAM via TechAuthority (see previous thread), but also have a question for you folks that have already serviced your 68RFE automatic transmissions. Looks like the pan is "glued" on with silicone rubber and must be cut off. Also there doesn't appear to be a drain plug on the bottom of the pan. Looks like that will be as fun as sitting in the first five rows at Sea World's Shamu show...only I will be covered with transmission oil instead of ocean water.

When I do perform a service on my 68RFE transmission, I plan to replace the factory pan with a MAG-HYTEC high-capacity pan, which does have a drain plug. So here's my question...

Is there a "replacement" gasket available for the 68RFE transmission that can be purchased from a 3rd party...so I don't have to glue the pan back on when I finish the service/inspection?

I really liked the plastic gasket I used for my older (1995) 67RH transmission that had parallel raised ridges traced around the gasket...never had a leak and they were fairly inexpensive...and I don't see anything in Geno's Garage for the 68RFE either.

So what do you think...something out there for me to try instead of silicone rubber?

Thanks, Kevin

Use the sealant the factory recommends and you'll likely never have a leak.
Click on the link above. Since the OP is replacing his pan with an aluminum Mag HyTec, they recommend the above gasket with their aluminum pans. They state "NOTE: We do not recommend using this gasket on OEM transmission pans as it will leak. Use RTV sealant on OEM pans."
I have used the OEM sealant twice on my previous 2007.5 RAM 3500 MegaCab w/68RFE and it was dry as a bone at each servicing.

I got one from NAPA, cant remember exactly but I think is was for the 545 transmission. There is NOT one listed for the 68RFE, but I did check and they ARE THE SAME

Looks like you just use RTV. This is for the 2014 68RFE.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the input.

For Bob V., can you tell me what you got from Napa? Was it the type of gasket seal I described in my initial thread? Rubberized with sealing vanes around the perimeter? Just wondering.

As a final question, how difficult is it to get the original pan off the transmission? Do you have to cut it off using a thin blade of some kind? I know that silicone rubber can hold on pretty tightly some times. I've never had any trouble with differential covers, however, but I'm trying to judge the difficulty when removing the factory pan on the 68RFE. I know it is going to slosh since there is no drain plug. Any help on this subject would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kevin

Thanks for the info Bob4X4,

I look forward to hearing back from Robert Patton at Geno's about the Cascade neoprene rubber gasket I saw on the webl...and why they don't have them available at Geno's. It would be nice to have an easily replaceable gasket for the 68RFE pan. We'll see.

Thanks again, Kevin

Thanks for the input Bob4x4,

Yeah, I plan to install a Mag-Hytec aluminum pan with drain plug...don't want to deal with a pan without a drain plug...and if that helps with leaks as well, all the better.

Kevin

Hey lawdog1,

Yeah, I've seen the gasket you're talking about...looks like a thin paper gasket from the web image I looked at. Never used one...so not sure if it needs RTV sealant or can be installed dry.

Hopefully you can PM me if it works out for you. I got spoiled when Dodge came out with the rubberized ones for my older 47RH transmission...and they NEVER leaked.

Anyway, I hope the Mag-Hytec one works by itself, because that's what I'm planning to use as a pan also.

Kevin

The gasket is thin but it does not look like paper, looks almost like cork. The rear diff cover has a built in rubber gasket. I will let you know how it goes I have not reviewed the install instructions yet, but Geno give you loads of detail and tips for install in my experience. If you have a question about the gasket I would just call Geno's tech line, they will give you the skinny. Even if you have to use a little RVT, I don't see the big deal with that, just don't use too much and get it in the pan.

I just had the dealer do my transmission service and install the Maghytec 68RE pan. ....I have a lifetime warranty on the truck if I keep it serviced by a dealer or ASE shop so that cuts me out of the shade tree repair business like I did on my '03. They did use the factory sealant on the Maghytec pan along with the gasket that came with the pan. It does not leak and took about 2.5 quarts of extra fluid....the Maghytec rear diff cover I put on used 8 quarts (and no sealant, just the rubber gasket provided w/ the cover.)
