Hi TDR members and moderators,

I'm wondering if there is any way to convert my 99 4X2 to a 4X4.

Has this been attempted and if so how stable is the conversion? If It's possible will I be plagued with mechanical problems or not?

thanks,

This is a complicated process, and would require a lot of parts swapping. I am not sure if they even use the same frame as a starting point. A much better way would be to sell your 2-wheel drive and buy the 4-wheel drive that you want. You would come out money ahead, as well as less time and headaches . Randy

I pondered this question for a few months, sold my 2wd and purchased a 4wd. If I had to do it all over again I would find a 4wd same year rollover/salvage as my 2wd with a complete drivetraine and do a total restore as I mated my 2wd body and motor to the new 4wd drive train.

My 2wd was a great truck, nothing wrong with it everything was nice and tight sold it for $8m bought the new one for $13M with the same millage as my 2wd. I have spent $5M to $8M making the new one into a sold truck and I'm a long way from being done.

I did a total body swap on my 87 4Runner and it was easy. If you like your truck and it is GOOD SHAPE I would do the swap. There is a guy on Ebay thats out of ARK and he quoted me $2500 for a rolling chassis, transfer case with 5speed.

For the money I think this is the best way to go. Unless you go out and find a 2nd gen with low millage less the 50M and those truck are priced in the high teen early $20M range.

Thanks guys,

All I can say is that it sucks to be me. I only have need for the 4x4 for a few jobs but those are the jobs that can build a reputation when done right.
