Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) is there any way to tell if vp44 is original or not?

I was wondering if anybody out there might know of a way to identify the injection pump on a used vehicle to see if it had ever been replaced or not. are there any tell tale signs to look for or records that maybe a dealer could look up to show the original numbers on the pump?

This is just from what I have come across in my travels and working on MANY 24 valve trucks. DEALER/Manufacture and/or Cummins puts a yellow tag on the VP electric plug that says "VOID" from FACTORY. Neither dealer or aftermarket put this back on after VP change. I have never seen one with a VP and I have never seen a source to get it. If the sticker is gone or cut it is not probably original. Just my $. 02

The OEM pump will be a cast silver color with no stickers for part #. the void sticker was only used for a relatively short period. If it is black it is a reman. if it has a part# sticker it is a reman. I worked on a truck Sat that had the oem pump at 295xxx miles. Some live longer than expected.

My `02 did not have the yellow sticker from the factory, and it only lasted to 67,000.

out of curiousity, if I just put on an Air Dog 100 as preventitive maintance VP 44, should I still be worried about VP44 taking a dump? Its the original with 107K on it.

Mostly, no you don't need to worry about it. My understanding is that the vast majority of VP44 failures is due to the electronics cooking from excessive heat. Your Air Dog provides much more fuel flow which serves to cool the VP44 (the excess fuel flows back through the return to the tank).

While I was changing the apps today I got a good look at the sticker on the IP.

Also, the pump is black as stated before and it does have the void sticker on it. This is good news, at 160,000 i'm glad it's not the original. I think I may go ahead and install the smaller $240 FASS to maybe extend the life of the IP. Do you think this would be a worthwhile idea. The smaller FASS from geno's is supposed to put out something like 30% more fuel. Any thoughts?

It has been my experience that most failures are mechanical... ... ... I am into the thousands on vp replacements
