Is this a bad lift pump?

On way home today, truck starts "missing" at around 1700rpm and up... idles fine. Basically truck feels like someone is turning the key on and off when I start to push on the go pedal, even when i do it gently (only under load)

Without a fuel pressure gauge this is pretty hard to determine. As I see it you have three options. Install a gauge post filter to see if you are getting fuel pressure beyond the filter; make up a simple test gauge (check past threads) to check pressure; take it to the dealer and have them check it. You could also just change the filter to see if it helps. Good luck...

filter's got about 10k on it... i'm gonna change it in the morning... if truck still runs bad then I guess it's off to the dealer. Luckily I have a great dealer with an excellent service dept, however it's still a hassle.

Try this: Turn the key on and listen to the lift pump. Does it run a few seconds or about 30 or so every time. Do you hear it at all? If it runs on its long cycle then it could very well be the filter. Also try draining the water seperater too. Just a little advise.

update: changed the filter and it made a world of difference... however, i still sensed an almost imperceptible miss at times (I don't think anybody but me would have noticed it on my truck). So, I went ahead and went to the dealer... lift pump was dying. Had about 10 lbs at idle but sounded bad (I mentioned that it had noticibly quieted down. Tech just changed it, no problem. . says he does about 6 a month (just love this dealer-no hassle, just results!). Now have 14 idle, 11 wot.



ps, i'll work up another post, but the tech showed me a collection of stuff he's pulled from mistreated rams, man what a collection.

What did the tech mean by mistreated RAMS. Even if he wasn't specific you would be able to tell from the stuff he showed you.
