Is this an upgrade??

I recently replaced the turbo on my 95 automatic. Would this stock turbo be an upgrade for a 1st generation truck? A friend has a 92, (I think) 5 speed and has been eyeing my old turbo.

Quite a few people have put on an HX-35 on. It'll get boost faster, but you have to watch your egts a little more.

If it is the hx35 than it would be an improvement over stock. He should also change the exhaust housing, I'm pleased with the 16cm.

Based on my personal experience, if your friend has 3. 54 gears and stock injectors (pump settings can be non-stock), the 12cm housing on the HX35 would be a good upgrade. However, the opening pressure of the wastegate need to be bumped to the mid 20s-30psi to do any good- 17psi isnt enough air. This can be accomplished by either adjusting the rod on the wastegate or installing a boost fitting.



If he has 4. 10 gears, and/ or aftermarket injectors, I'd say go for a 16cm housing like matches said. The 12 is just too restrictive at higher power levels and RPMs.



THe HX35 has a wider efficiency map than the H1C; thus it retains its eficiency beyond where the H1C starts to fall off.

The stock turbo on my 95 was the WH1C! I didn't think that was possible, but DC must have thrown leftover parts at mine before the switch to the HX35. Mine isn't the only one, though. This turbo for sale on eBay is also a WH1C, and is listed as from a 95.

How do I identify my turbo

The turbo on my 90 is a Holset type HIC.



What am I looking for to replace it?

With the 3" inlet on your stock H1C, you are somewhat limited on replacements, unless you want to do some afro-engineering like I did to fit my PDR HX35 into the crossover. An HX35 will bolt up to the engine and turbine housing. If your turbo is in good shape, and you dont have any EGT issues, I'd leave it for now. I got my HX35 because my stock turbo was shot, and I needed to replace or rebuild it, so it was a god time to upgrade. Plus, I got the HX35 used for 1/2 of new retail.

What would the egt issues be? How would they show?



Is the inlet on the HX35 LARGER THAN 3 INCH? I am using this in a custom application, a 1953 Hudson Hornet, so engineering is not too difficult.

The HX35 (and newer H1Cs) have a 4" inlet, and a flared outlet to the intercooler elbow, crossover, etc. The older H1C has a non-flared outlet to take a rubber/ silicone boot.



EGT issues would be determined by a pyrometer, probe in the manifold.
