fifth wheel movement at the receiver

Gps

Mom and I are considering buying our first Travel Trailer. We found a '94 "Thor Chateau"... (22') A bit smaller than planned but the condition and layout are nice, seems to be priced right, 7000. found others, same year and model for 9000.

I had a few questions and the experienced members advice is GREATLY appreciated.

1. Is the condition of the tanks an issue at this age?

2. Is "Thor" a good make?

3. The suspension appears to be a twist type, maybe torque. . any good? A square axle goes across the width and no springs are visable. Can shocks be fitted if none are there?

4. What should I look for and/or be concerned with on this trailer?

The condition is real good, the ceiling shows no evidence of leaks, wheels are 15". No gen but I have a Honda 2500. The

underside is enclosed and looks good.

You input is greatly appreciated.

95, I'm no expert but I've owned a couple of travel trailers. Thor is a very reputable brand. Torsion axles are great. I have a set on a 32' van trailer that I've pulled 150,000 miles. The ride is good and maintainence is mimimal. Check out the appliances -- air conditioner and refrig. Also heating unit and hot water heater. More expensive than home appliances. Usually can tell by overall condition how someone took care of something. Check it out close. Good luck. S. Stokes

Stokes, Is trailer torsion suspension full independant or is it like a twist beam on these front wheel drive cars. ie VW Jetta in the rear? Are there shocks?

Suspension is fully independent. I had a brake come apart and noticed it getting hot. Trailer was empty so I just took the wheel off and ran 50 miles down I49 to fixit guy. (Don't try that with a heavy load. The only drawback is if you haul heavy loads on very uneven surfaces like offroad, in a field, etc. If one wheel gets on a high spot and the other low, one wheel carries all the weight for a short time. Only a problem with heavy loads and very uneven ground. On a camper, You'll like them. SSdtokes

I don't think you have to worry so much about the holding tanks since they are made of plastic. I would be certain the refrigerator and hot water heater works and the heater tank doesn't leak. Checking out the air conditioner is necessary as well.

Look for any signs of leaks on the ceiling, and check all the floors for rot. Just take your foot and push on it all around especially around the edges to feel for any soft spots. Check the condition of the roof as well. and if it is a rubber roof, look for large bubbles under it.

Check the storage compartments for moisture as well. Check the outer skin for any protrusions that would indicate delamination of the outer skin.

The axles are torque flex and it is a knee action suspension. No shocks or springs.

If all those things check out then you are probably getting a good buy.
