Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fuel pressure question

Hi, kids.

First, to qualify myself, I'm an "under-valved" owner, so I haven't been following the 24valve threads particularly. I need your help understanding something.

I wandered into a local DC stealership the other day while waiting for our car to be fixed at the stealer next door and ran into a salesman who has an '02 1-ton. He says he only tows with it - not his daily drive. He tows a 7K lbs jet boat and carries a big Lancer (?) camper. He sells Power Edge boxes and has a single setting box on his truck (an EZ?). I believe he said it was a 65 HP box, but it might have been an 85. Anyway he says he can regularly outpull any of his jet boat club buddies with Powerstrokes and Duramaxes with only their boats in tow - no campers on their backs. That may be true. The disconnect I had came when he said he doesn't have gauges because he almost never gets over 1200*, even when racing his buds up hills all loaded up, and he claims it dynod at 375 HP and a bit over 900 ft-lbs torque.

OK. An '02 w/auto, no other mods than this box (he may have said he has a 4" exhaust - I can't remember), which is either a 65hp or 85hp box, that dynos at 375hp and doesn't blow excessive smoke and doesn't get too hot to need gauges.

After reading these forums almost daily for over 2 years, I'm thinking somebody's math is messed up or he really is blowing smoke. Can you provide me with a little info to either set me straight or if I run into him again I can talk/question intelligently?

Thanks,

JK

i like this part, how does he know it doesn't go over 1200 with out guages? maybe if he had a comp or the pulse he would be close to those hp #'s, but his egt's would be higher than 1200!!

It sounds like the smoke he's blowing is the same stuff the use to sell us the stuff we don't want, . :-laf At least my own mother who sells us the CTD's at a stealer, doesn't blow smoke like that.

:p

  hehe. . On a stock Trany... . Even on a manual most stock clutchs can't hold 375hp. . Just with the my Comp box I know I am way shy of 375hp. . Sounds like all smoke. .

Usually the people have never been in a truck that actually made those kind of numbers. (RWHP) They just think that's what they actually have until they have been on a dyno or in a truck that has actually posted those numbers. If the Exhaust was listed to help 5-10. . they got at least 10HP for that. . airfilter +15. . box +85hp. . and use rated engine HP. . Looks like 355HP on an HO to me. . That's what I have. . Until U get on the dyno... Proclaimed numbers are not always what they are cracked up to me... many are posted as up to @@Hp gain. .

Invite him to a dyno day. . or give him a spin in a truck with Actual 375Hp. . (hehe or 575+HP. . ) He'll see the light. .

Also show him some EGT's with a box on. . that usually scares them into buying guages. . especially with a stock intake and exhaust systems. .

Remember he is on our side of Bombing. . just needs a little direction...

7K lbs boat - yeah, I was thinking that was a bit much, even with the trailer weight included along with all the junk he may have piled in the boat.

The other interesting/humorous/bizarre item he brought up was that he was trying to burn up his auto transmission so he'll have an excuse to install an Allison. Says he'll have to raise his truck 2 or 3 inches to get it under there, but that it will work. He says he has 10K miles on it and it's still holding up.

Thanks, guys.

JK

Just for comparrison sake... With all the BOMBs I have today, except I had an EZ instead of my hot Comp, I dynoed at 368 HP/800 #'s torque. With the upgrade from EZ to Comp, I expect to be right at 400/900 now.

So I can't believe he would be even above 300 HP with any single box, even if it was a hot Comp!

JGK,

Go back and tell him that on the dyno a 235hp rated truck lays down 195~200hp at the rear wheels. Add the EZ, and his rear wheel hp will only show a max of ~240hp! He is way off!

Trust us guys that are at dynos all the time.

He must be smoking the same stuff that the chevy guys smoke. Had a duramax owner tell me his stock truck blew the doors off a Cummins that dynoed 420 at the rear wheels. It must be the toxic gases that results when you mix aluminum and diesel. :)

Tell this bonehead that his "guesstimated" HP/torque number don't mean a thing UNLESS you have a dyno sheet. It seem like the guys that have dyno'd their trucks have a good estimate of how much each brand will make with various mods.

At the last DFW dyno days on 9/21, most of PSD guys made 295 HP. I guess they were all using the same mods...

I'll buy 2 of those boxes.

Maybe he only runs premium diesel, mirical oil, a tornado, stop slip in the transmission and hooked the batteries in series so the box would have double the voltage for twice the power. I bet this truck is probably averaging somewhere around 32 miles to a gallon. Yah... thats the ticket!

That's a funny story. Almost as funny as this one. My next-door neighbor is an RV salesman and we I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER-chat alot about my truck and what I've "done to it" for more power. He has seen my dyno sheets and knows that I am not BS'ing him although he regularly asks me why do I "need all that power?"

Anyway, the other day, he comes home from work and is all excited to tell me that a guy with a truck like mine came by his store that day. This "mystery" person was driving a 3500 with a Cummins and told my neighbor that his truck has 650hp!!! With only a different "pump" and injectors!!!

I told my neighbor that there are only a small handful of guys with 600+ hp in a 5. 9 Cummins and that guy isn't one of them. After a few more questions, guess who this "mystery" huge horsepower person is associated with??? Dr. Performance. Nuff said
