Keep in mind the stories were first created in England in 1945, a time when diesels were probably replacing steam locomotives, just as they were in the USA at the time. I'm sure there was quite a bit animosity shown towards the diesels that were replacing their beloved steamers.
Also, there are other diesels on the show that get bit parts that aren't bad. Mavis is one and there is a large passenger one who is nice.
