So I've read and read about hooking up theses gauges but just have one final question! My mechanical fp gauge hook-up! Do I hook the braided line directly to the back of my gauge through the firewall to a grease gun hose(18") and then connect the other end of the grease gun hose directly to the tapped banjo bolt in the fuel filter and voila that's it? Or am I missing somethin!!:D

Snubber

I don't think you even need the Snubber (Grease Gun Hose) for a mechanical gauge. Thought it was for the electric guage guys. Pressure pulses being hard on the sending units.

Call me a fool, I didn't even user braided hose. I used plastic tubing just likes on the boost guage. Cross your fingers! HEHEHE! I just had to see. Everybody keeps making a fuss about it'll leak. It doesn't leak with 80 psi of oil in it, why's it gonna leak with 14 psi of diesel in it? I did put a shut off on it at the filter housing. Total cost 5 bucks!!!

I've been running higher 12 valve pressure (30 psi) though boost tubing for 5 years, doesn't leak a drop. I do pass the hose though a protective sleeve of larger hose though.

sdrivanos, suggest you install a 1/8'' needle valve near the head of your line like barrington did. It will give you the option of shutting it down if you do have a leak or you might want to run the valve almost all the way shut if your gauge pulsates or buzzes.

I used illflem's approach to a 'T' and it's been working perfectly now for 2 months... I have the 1/8" needle valve on there, but doubt I'll ever use it (knock on wood so's I don't jinx myself).

Anyway, it works good, and looks good too.

EDIT: The line on the fitting coming from the fuel filter looks black, because that's 1/8" vacuum hose that I put around the plastic tubing to protect it up inside the cab where it goes behind the radio and all the other sharp stuff.

snowracer!! in your last pic with the needle valve I can't tell where in the engine you have made that connection i was going to connect mine at the fuel filter I don't think that is where you have yours? and as for my original question the way I am hooking up is correct? gauge to braided hose to snubber(to needle valve)to tapped banjo? Thanks for the help!!

sdrivanos,

snowracer has the needle valve connected under the fuel filter (post filter), and yes, the way you have it is correct, gauge, braided line, rubber hose, needle valve, filter.

Rob is correct... sorry I didn't say that... . it's post filter. I got a tapped banjo from Advanced Diesel Technologies, and the 90* elbow, and the valve, and everything else... works great. My gauge shows 14 psi at idle, after engine (and diesel) is warm, 11-12 at cruise, and 3-4 psi at WOT w/ Comp on 5x5... that's gonna cause a problem with the DD3's, but I will take it easy till I get my pusher on come later this spring... when I have money again. I won't take a chance on frying that VP44... I figure 3x5 w/ the injectors oughta be plenty for now... depending on the pressures.

Illflem,

I did not remove the glass. I cut very slowly with a razor blade the back end off. If you cut the gauge just about 1/16 to 1/8 inch down from the back end on the round side, the gauge comes apart and will even bolt back together. The two studs will stay attached to the sides of the gauge and the gauge mechanics will slide out attached to the back or end. To put the gauge back together use the two nuts that came with the gauge for the clamp.

I used a block of wood cut to the height of the gauge minus 1/16 of an inch. With the glass face down, slowly rotated the gauge holding the razor blade flat on the block of wood cutting the side of the gauge. You need to cut a like more around the studs with an x-acto knife or jewlers saw. The gauge then pulls apart.

I then use a P-touch labeler to make a "Fuel Oil" label that just covered the "Boost" marking. Bolt back together and fuel oil pressure gauge. It was a Autometer gauge BTW.

I was waiting for IssPro to come out with an electrical FP gauge but was thinking about using a mechanical FP. So I gather that using the same type tubing for your boost gauge can also be used to run it to the FP gauge? And you use diesel all the way to the FP gauge?

Someone said to have a hose company to make you a hose with a 1/8 NPT? and a schrader valve on the other.

How does this sound?
