I have just purchased a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 which I believe has the ISB engine (as oppsed to HPCR). The production date is 8-02 and the 10th digit of the VIN is 3 which should mean 2003. It seems as if this date of production should have had HPCR? I've read on this forum that HPCR started in July of 2002? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your responses. The body is the newer body style. I should have said this in the first post... a sticker on the engine reads "model no. ISB 305" and "advertised HP 305". I drove a 2005 that was much quieter than this 2003, I assume that the '05 has HPCR. In issue 47, pages 44-45, there is a table that lists model years, with the respective fuel delivery systems that were used. This 2003 truck does not appear to fit any of the categories on that table. If it were an '02, ISB would make sense except for the horsepower rating (would be 245 HP for a 2002 truck), but it is an '03 per the VIN and production date. Just doesn't add up. I hope I haven't further cofused anyone.

My 04 engine sticker says ISB 305, also. It is the HPCR system. You have the ISBe 305/555 engine. The "e" stands for electronic.

Sounds perfectly normal to me.

The old engine would not simply fit into a new truck.

There are alot of mounting hardware differences.

(air, coolant, electronics etc. )

I thought on the HPCR motor that the lift pump was no longer located on the driver's side at the top-front of the block. Can't exactly say for sure, but I don't think it's there on the photos you posted. It's there on my truck. The image below is the piece I am speaking of (the image may not show up, it's not showing in the preview). Maybe it's not the lift pump, I'm almost guessing this component's name.

On the ISB, it is the VP-44 fuel injection pump. Not the lift pump. Not sure what that the part is for on your engine. Not that familiar with the ISBe.

PLohr,

You have a HPCR Cummins ISBe engine in your truck. Some minor changes occurred to this engine when the switch over to the 325/600 took place in 2004. 5 including the disappearance of what your describing. However, for the most part the engines are the same.

PLohr, the item the arrows point to in your pic is the APPS = Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor. It's Dodge's name for the TPS. My '03 did not have this item, there was nothing bolted to the engine there: #ad

Some 2003s have the APPS, others use the ECM (engine control module, the computer on the side of the engine block).

ISBe stands for interact system B engine echo

eclipse = P pmp 12 valve

encore = VP44 pump 24 valve

echo = HPCR 24 valve

Isn't the first picture in bmoeller's post of a '04. 5? The reason I ask, is the fan shroud that looks like it's mounted to the engine like mine. That was a change made for '04. 5s. What's confusing is the APPS that is present, which isn't present on mine. :confused:

My 04. 5 has the apps mounted there and I still have a lift pump behind the fuel

filter. I thought it was 05 when they moved the apps and lift pump.

If the APPS is not on top the engine like PLohr's picture shows it's under the driver side battery. Two different styles got used. Not sure why. On my 305/555 '04 the APPS is under the battery.

Joe, I'm the first to admit you're smarter than me, but you're wrong in this case.

Early-build 2003 trucks had the TPS (APPS) located where PLohr's is. Late build (after sometime in December 2003, I think) have it located beneath the drivers side battery. My point is that both models have an APPS.

With all due respect...

Apps

My truck was built 4/25/03 (I'm not sure of my engine build date but I will take a look at that when I get home) and I do not have the APPS mounted up there over the injection pump. I guess its under the battery as the engine is electronically controlled. Is the difference between early automatic and manual trucks? Ken Irwin
