I'm thinkin if it's a manual it's under the battery and an auto is above the cp3 pump, it has to be there on the auto due to kickdown cable location.

My '03 six speed has APPS on engine above injection pump, so maybe they put under battery for manuals in 04. 5?

Kirwin, you disproved my theory after I went back and read again

You are right that they are both called APPS in the service manual. They don't work the same, though. The one on the engine is a linear potentiometer. The one under the battery tray produces two voltage signals, one half that of the other. In both cases, the signals vary with accelerator position. I should have been clearer and not indicated the unit under the battery was not a type of APPS.

This is true. The earlier model is a potentiometer and the later model is a hall-effect device.

[I knew you were smarter than me!]

Engine build date

My engine was built 16 Apr 2003 (wow only 8 days between engine build and truck build!), it has the throttle position sensor (APPS) under the battery I guess, at least its not on top of the block. Funny that part is not listed in the Cummins parts list. Is it a Dodge only part? Does this thing only input to the ECM on manual transmission trucks? Ken Irwin

My Cummins on my '03 was built February 17 '03 I believe and the APPS was under the battery as you saw in my pic.

What's up with you guys though, no comments on my purdy ATS manifold?? :p

Ooops, thanks for correcting me, Joe. Guess I should do a little more research before I start making guesses. :D

I thought it might be an auto/manual thing, also, but after looking at the posts in this thread, that theory was disproved.

Vaughn - Nice manifold, and I like the valve cover, also. What kind of paint did you use, and how well is it holding up to the heat?

I would have commented on how nice it is, if you hadn't abandoned us poor souls and bought a 12v! c ;)

Heheh. . . yep I was bad and bought an undervalved wonder rbatelle, but at least I come around from time to time to keep everyone in line here ;)

Jim, I put Por 15's Por-20 header coating on and it held up pretty well for awhile, then it started to peel unfortunately. It was supposed to be rated to 1500F but evidently not. I may not have prepped adequately though.

The valve cover took a bit of work, but I was fairly happy with it.

Holy Off Topic Batman

To answer the original question, count the fuel lines coming off the injector pump to the injectors. If there's 1, you have an HPCR, if there's 6, you don't.

Vaughn,

Thanks for the info. And don't let anyone give you a hard time about the 12V. I keep mine around so I have something to drive when the new one breaks. :D
