I changed my fuel filter today(Sunday of course). When I started to check for leaks I saw white smoke coming from the grommet area for the fuel heater electric wires. I shut things off real quick!! I disconnected the fuel heater wires from the wire harness and restarted. No smoke but noticed fuel seeping from around the grommet area. I can’t tell if from the edges of the grommet or from the area where the wires enter the grommet. Does anyone know if I can replace the fuel heater assembly with the filter head still mounted on the engine? Or, do I have to take the fuel filter assembly off and to the work bench. If I take it off I will have to take the banjo fittings for the fuel inlet and outlet off. Do I need new gaskets for reassembly? Some time ago I looked at a shop manual at my dealer and remember that there are three screws that hold the heater assembly to the underside of the filter head but I can’t remember how you are supposed to replace it. Any help appreciated!

well tim if you saw screws holding it from underside then you have to pull the filter and probably make your life easier to remove the filter head ,. if you are careful you can remove the banjos without having to replace the seal washers . i have had mine on and off at least 5 times , no leaks ... now would be a good time to modify the bolts also .

heres another hint and would have saved tyou from asking , the money you spend on the factory service manual will be the best money you spend on your ram , more info than you probably will ever want to know .
 
These seem to be popping up more and more. Last week I replaced a fuel heater on a '99 for fuel leaking from it. The fuel had been leaking so long that it wicked down and thru the entire engine wiring harness and caused the oil pressure sender to go nuts. Diesel fuel found its way all the way around to the right side of the engine and into the connectors for the ac compressor. Heated diesel acts like penetrating oil and will follow the wiring and convolute like a trail. When you replace the heater/filter head, check a few connectors like the oil pressure and crank sensor for any diesel in them.
