I don't know if this belongs here, or in the 2nd Gen topics, or both, but here goes. At my job we have a fleet of ISB powered Jhonston sweepers. Presently there is one down for a no- start, and the diagnosis was that there is an erratic crank sensor signal. The sensor was removed and it was mutilated. The next step was to remove the pan and have a look. Sure enough there was shrapnel in the pan.

There is a tone ring or reluctor that triggers the crank sensor that is fastened to a crank counterweight via small countersunk screws at around the 4th main. The ring is halfed so it can be removed, and one half came loose and got circulated. The last I saw of the job, we were waiting parts, the rest of the engine appears in good shape.

I don't know the similarites between this engine and a Ram ISB (is the sensor arrangment the same, etc. ?) I have never heard of this before.

Almost the same exact thing happened to TDR member "Amianthus" (His name is Aron and he lives up towards LaCrosse, WI) a while back.

I don't recall the specifics, but the short version is that it was a HUGE pain in the neck to repair. I believe the reluctor ring mounted to the crank got fouled up just like yours.

From what I understand, not many ISBs have both a cam and crank sensor (like his engine and the one in your sweeper). Most of them just have a cam sensor that is mounted in the exact same place as the timing pin on a 12-valve. Those can be fun to replace... but it is a lot easier than tearing into the bottom end of the engine.

Aron's ISB is now P-pumped, so he doesn't need to worry about cam/crank sensors anymore. :)
