I appreciated the conversation in another thread between TDR members MMullenax and Bob4x4 who are apparently Dodge dealership technicians and knowledgeable about Cummins diesel engines. I began drafting this question on that thread following their discussion then realized I was improperly highjacking someone else's thread and moved over here to start another.
As I understand Chrysler's policy from their discussion, anyone who owns an ISB6. 7 engine still in factory warranty should visit an authorized dealer and have the latest TSB performed whether his truck is exhibiting codes or CELs, or not. I also understand also that the software download should be performed on request at no charge to the owner. Are both statements correct?
The latest issue of TDR magazine (May, June, July 2009) lists TSB 18-009-07 RV B as outstanding for all C&C trucks built before 1/13/09. My truck was built in January '08 and delivered to me on March 3rd, 2008.
My truck has been trouble-free for over 45,000 miles with the exception of a CEL (erroneous reading of fuel rail pressure) which was lighted for a couple thousand miles last September but cleared itself when I hooked up and pulled my heavy fiver 300 miles.
I am reluctant to "mess with a good thing. " In other words, I am hesitant about having a reflash done which may change some operating parameter, fueling map, or feature which I am accustomed to and appreciate.
Is it safe to have this reflash done? Will it actually provide some type of improvement or improve the chances that I will not experience turbo sooting, DPF plugging, or some other dreaded malady? Is it possible that it will cause some unexpected disappointment?
Advice and opinions appreciated.
