Well, I finally got my 5503 tach working, so for those looking for help, hope you can find some here.

The bum deal is the tach comes with NO instructions, or pigtail leads on it like the other gauges in the series. The adapter wiring harness has a short instruction sheet but does not show you what to do at the tach end.

So this is how I hooked it up.

Outer black wire on the under dash tach connector is ground, this goes to the - screw on the tach.

Inner black wire on the connector is switched 12 VDC, this goes to the + screw on the tach. NOTE: remove the 24 to 12 volt resistor from this terminal, and wire straight to tach.

Grey wire on connector goes to the S (signal) terminal on the tach. The harness instructions tell you to use the line with the filter in it (white), mine did not work this way, I had to wire it without the filter (yellow).

Orange wire on connector is dash light power, this goes to the spade connector for the lights.

I talked to Don in the tech dept at Isspro ((888) 447-7776) and mentioned that it would be nice to get instructions with the product... ... So give him a call if you still have problems.

Ran into the same problem. Fortunately, I still had my instructions for my R8503 that I was upgrading to the EV series tach. I had to install the mapgnetic sensor/pickup when I did the initial install. Everything works great and now I can even see it at night.

Carl,

You had to install a pick-up on a 91. 5 model year truck to use the tachometer???????? Perhaps you guys are using a different series tach than what my ISSPRO is. My truck is a 92 and it was already wired for the factory tach. The 91. 5 must be different... but still dosn't explain why Flexiheep had no instructions. Mine did.

My harmonic balancer had the cut outs for the magnets but none mounted. They started installing the factory setup in 92. Yeah, I did have to spend some extra $$$ to buy the sensor but it all works now!

Carl

My 91 (11/90- nonIC) has the notches in the h-balancer, too. My 91. 5 had the notches, and no pickup, either.

Nice looking rig, Carl. You got a new home for that standard ISSPRO tach?;)

Daniel

Flexiheep,

Your post helped me install my 5503 tach from PDR today. But... I goofed somewhere and don't have lights in the tach when I turn on the parking and/or headlamps. Rest of the dash is fine.

Question: The 5503 has two spades for the lights. Which one did you connect the green wire to, or did you split the signal and send it to both spades, or... ???? I connected it to the bottom right spade (if looking at the tach from the back). Guess maybe I should've connected it to the other one, or am I missing something? They look like they are connected on the back of the tach. Any help here would be appreciated!!

Also, does the 5503 throw out white light or green? If white, would it be a dumb thing to color the bulbs with permanent markers or stain glass paint from a craft store (my wife makes me go these places with her, really).

Clint, It doesn't matter which one you hook the switched 12V to. Just hook the other one up to ground. and they will work. Kind of goofy but the light circuit is ENTIRELY seperate from anything else. There is no shared ground.

I put the bulb covers from ISSPRO on mine. Otherwise, they are pretty white. I have 2 bulb covers on each bulb. Now they are nice and blue. If you buy from them, they actually package 2 to a package because they felt as single cover didn't change the color enough (or so their note days). You could go the other route as well.

Carl

Carl,

Once again, you are a wealth of info!

Are there any good points near the a-pillar to ground this to?

One other question:Since the wires provided by Isspro look like 20 gauge or smaller, I assume a length of 16 gauge (smallest I have in the garage) to a ground with a spade connector on the other end to the unused spade will do the trick?

I ran my ground all the way back to under my dash, for no reason other than I wanted it where all the others were. I didn't want to have to track down a ground problem some time in the future and not remember one.

For the lights, what I did was I spliced my light ground into the tach ground so I only had one ground wire running down to under my dash.

Carl

Glad it helped you Clint, I guess that is why I posted it :D

I guess I should have said something about the light wiring, but I guess I assumed (we all know what that does). I powered the lights off the tach light wire, but ran my own ground back under the dash, to the same point my stereo is grounded. No real reason to do this, I guess it just makes me feel better or something, if I am ok with the positive side being 20 gauge wire why not the negative side too.....

Thanks for filling in the hole Carl.

I'm a bit of a newbie around cars/trucks. My first gauge install; thought the whole gauge was grounded via that single post. Grounded the second spade and ... it worked. Got the boost gauge installed too. A little green Vis-a-Vis pen on the bulbs, and the color matches the dash lights. Now, on to the pyro and transmission temp while I install the new turbo, housing and transmission pan. Slippery slope... here I come
