It couldn't hold

Entered a truck pull yesterday and got my butt kicked !



I was going up against 4 fords, all had various horespower inprovements. I thought for sure I would kicka$$.



I was #4 to do the pull. The first 3 all pulled in to the 250 foot mark. So I thought no problem, Do a 3rd gear 4low take off and let it rip !



Well it went good for about 75 feet then the clutch went south( no pun intented). You should of seen the smoke, the white smoke engulfed the whole front of the truck.



Now I am fully aware that this clutch was not made for pulling, I figured what the hell it hasn't slipped yet, no problem. Boy was I wrong.



Now to make things worse I was kinda giving the ford guys a bad time, man did I have to eat some crow. Then going back into the grandstands and having my 8 year old son giving me a bad time cause I got beat by the fords. It was a bad day.



I not saying that I had a bad clutch or anything like that. The clutch works just like South Bend said it would. Peter told me that if I wanted a pulling clutch he would make me one. In my view its a good clutch.



I'm not to sure how long this clutch is going to last now that I ate it up. I do know one thing for sure I will have a stronger clutch before I try any more pulls or run my mouth off and not being able to back it up.



You know we can make a lot of power with these engines, its holding and applying the power thats the hard thing to do.



I guess its time to give Southbend a call .

Brian, I have that same clutch sitting on the floor waiting to go in. In the next week or two I plan on having the same set up as you execpt the PDR Turbo 16cm Exhaust housing and Pro Shot 2000. If you could keep me updated on how things go with South Ben and what they recommended. Of all the post that I have read on the South Ben clutches it seems like it shoud have held with no problem. Oh, one more thing, have you been on a Dyno yet? If so, what's the H. P. , if you don't mind?

The Con O clutch is not designed as a pulling clutch. Pulling sleds you dont want an organic type material. The Con O is.

Sorry to here of the problem. Give me a call on Monday and we will get it taken care of.







I do not build my clutches for sled pulls! Drivability clutches and sled pull clutches can not be in the same sentence. I will post some of my concerns at a latter date about sled pulling and the safety factors that are not taking place. Dangerous business.

Boy howdy, did Peter just say a mouthfull there. I've seen a few pics lately where there were apparently no cages built around the driveshafts. That was one of the first safety innovations that was enacted due to a couple of deaths/injuries to spectators in the past at outlaw/nonsanctioned pulls. Then later came the kevlar jackets for the trannies, clutches, and flywheels.
