This little sucker is great!:) Saved a ton of time, patience, and skinned knuckles... but lets see if anyone knows what it is. :D Maybe Bob will throw in a couple RWHP for the correct guess. ;)

Dan,

You got me:confused:

Is that some sort of plug or cap that's under it?

Does that have something to do with the tool?

Don't tell just yet! Need a little clue

:D

We have a winner!Oo. First post, too - welcome!:)

Last time I did the rear brakes I fought with those friggin' hold down springs with a pair of Vice Grips... . didn't work too well, either. I picked up the right tool from http://www.etoolcart.com - between it and another brake tool it was less than $30, including shipping. :)

This is the other tool I picked up - between the two of them, the rear brakes are much easier to change. :) I'd strongly recommend buying them before your next brake job. ;)

Dan,

I was pulling the spring on my ol' 67 Chevy II (many moons ago). I was using the tire for a seat. I had just about max tension on it when my vise grips let go. The angle I was pulling caused me to punch myself in the face and knock myself backwards. Must have been hilarious to see.

Sure does feel good to have the proper tool for the job.

Hmmm..... getting older dont look too appealing

I use a flat screw driver for the brake hold downs (as shown in photo #2), and vice grips for the rest of it. Have very little trouble with this method. (watch, I'll come away from the next brake job missing 2 fingers, now. Way to jinx yerself, dumbass:rolleyes: )

Getting old looks very good at 61.

By the way, what is the screwdrive looking thing. I only have the Vise grips.

Heck, it's funny just thinking about it... . :D:D:D

dpuckett - I have very little patience when it comes to wrenching, so I take advantage of anything that might make the job easier. ;)

Oh, and I think I saw Murphy taking notes after he read your reply..... :D

The screwdriver-looking thing has a threaded sleeve with a notch on the end. You slip the spring into the notch, tighten it down, and you can use it to pull the spring into/out of place. It's the same concept as using vice grips, but it grabs better and gives you more leverage. :)

Murphy has a file cabinet full of notes on me already, what's a few more? Besides, I already cancelled him out with my own catching of my self jinx. ;)

Is that an adapter that you put on a regular screwdriver or did it come that way?

Does it do the same thing as this?

It came that way - I haven't used the tool in your pic so I'm not sure if it works the same or not.

Here is a closer pic of the business end - the spring slips into the groove and you tighten the stud against it to keep it from slipping out.
