i dump in 12 liters at a change [the bottles are marked 4 liters, and not 3. 78L/1gallon] and don't really look at it too closely after that. it comes to a hair above the full mark. i do a quick check at fuel stops. as long as the oil isn't below the low or over the full and i can't smell fuel oil mixed in the lube it is good for me. my engine doesn't leak much [something is weeping at the front, but no dripping] and it isn't consuming any excess amounts of oil [less than 1 liter over 10,000km]

Maybe there is added capacity on the third gens? The owner's manual of my '99 called for 11 quarts, and the owners manual of my 04. 5 calls for 12 quarts.

My 07 5. 9L manual says 12 quarts, I will say this... that dip stip is very sensitive of the truck being on level ground. I pull mine in the garage to check, and most of the time I put about 11. 5 qaurts in mine because it always reads a little over with 12 in it.
